A golden run of San Fran fun

A golden run of San Fran fun

On a picturesque day in San Francisco, the sun was beaming down and illuminating the Golden Gate Bridge. We took advantage of the unusually pristine conditions and put our fitness to the test on the 5.4 km run across the famous landmark.

Along our journey, despite battling slow pedestrians, high speed cyclists and high pressure headwinds, we all finished in good spirits.

After taking some group shots, we departed the bridge to load up on carbohydrates with ex-Collegian Laura Peile who assisted with the organisation of the trip.

The next day our bank balances took a hit with our trip to downtown San Francisco.

Union Square, despite being a place of affluence, was scattered with those less fortunate than us and we were constantly given a reality check as we toured the high end fashion stores.

Following our city experiences and after a GPS failure, we finally arrived and were astounded by the facilities, landscaping and breadth of educational experiences on offer at the prestigious Berkeley University.

Whilst there we were taken on a guided tour of the Journalism Faculty and were made aware of just how important technology is in every facet of our lives.

That night, the baseball (LA Dodgers v S.F. Giants) provided us with a true American experience complete with corn dogs, foam fingers and churros.

We were amused by two merry American sports fans trying to imitate the Australian accent without much success. Thirty-five thousand fans provided as much entertainment as the players themselves.

The following day we set off for reMatch Sports, which is a company used to sell pre-owned sporting goods. It is a relatively new business, as it has only been open for just over 18 months.

Sven (owner and creator of reMatch) provided us with an insightful and inspirational presentation about his journey and passion, which resulted in the creation of reMatch Sports.

We now realise that we can achieve our hearts’ desires if we are determined and passionate about what we do. After learning about the pros and cons of starting your own company, we headed for the University of San Francisco which is situated in the heart of San Fran. Our tour guide was very enthusiastic and informative, presenting us with more opportunities to consider post BCC.

After a drive down to Palo Alto, Stanford University blew us away — an Ivy League University, the size of 96 Disney Lands, with facilities we could only dream about.

The charismatic tour guide gave us another unique perspective of how University life in America works and inspired us all to go to look beyond our immediate surroundings. Stanford only costs $56,000 US for the first year!

Whilst at Stanford University we were lucky enough to have George Foster, a Professor who specialised in entrepreneurship and sports management, speak to us. George taught us about the importance of creating your own brand, building strong networks and the need to be able to identify opportunities when they arise.

In the next couple of days we visit eBay, PayPal, Tesla, Google and Tokoni and possibly the home of Facebook.

Thanks for reading about our travels.
