I checked out some of the men’s gymnastics this arvo and despite the feminine connotations that are associated with this sport, it is difficult to be anything but impressed with how strong these blokes are.
The stuff they do on the rings is amazing.
It would be interesting to see how they fair against AFL footballers when it comes to strength.
As some gymnast spun and twisted his way through the air five metres above the ground before nailing a centimetre-perfect landing, the crowd went into a frenzy.
The commentator remarked that the atmosphere was more akin to an AFL Grand Final than a gymnastics meet.
Channel Seven must be given some credit for showing this as the Aussies are hopeless and weren’t even involved.
Also, anything football commentator extraordinaire Sandy Roberts is involved in can’t be all bad can it?
I mean, this is the bloke who coined the phrase, "I wanna be a Rocca star!"
But alas, even he can’t save Channel Seven’s coverage.
At one stage they cut to the women’s hockey and showed about five minutes of the second half before cutting to the men’s water polo.
With our women up 2-1 and the game seemingly in the balance, this was not the time to be sport-flicking.
But a quick check on the Olympic website revealed that the game had already finished and so had the water polo game (which was in the second quarter allegedly).
It seems Seven are content with being the channel of all sports, but masters of none…
Oh, and in response to public outrage, they have re-scheduled this weekend’s footy coverage.
