Tonight sees a story that embodies the true Olympic spirit come to fruition.
Lopez Lomong, 23, is the refugee from Darfur, Sudan, who carried the flag for the USA at the opening ceremony.
He will be running in heat three of the 1500m at 9.28pm.
Aged six, he was abducted from church by militia and held in captivity.
With a few other boys he managed to escape and they walked for three days until they came to Kenya, where they were put into a refugee camp.
That’s where he spent the next 10 years of his life, until he was taken to the US as part of a Christian refugee program.
He lived with a family in New York before attending Northern Arizona University.
In 2003 he was re-acquainted with his parents, who he presumed were dead but now live near Nairobi, Kenya.
He became a US citizen in 2007 and is a member of Team Darfur.
Team Darfur is an organization of athletes working to raise the world’s awareness of the tragedies that are occurring there on a daily basis.
It was founded by Olympian Joey Cheek, who had his visa revoked by China, preventing him from attending the Games.
Lomong’s personal best is 3min36.36sec, let’s hope he can beat that tonight…
