After an appalling Olympic campaign the Olyroos have crashed out due to their deserved 1-0 loss to Ivory Coast.
This followed a flogging by Argentina, where the 1-0 scoreline flattered them, and a lucky draw against Serbia, which forced a rant out of The Courier’s Gavin McGrath.
The Serbia game highlighted one of the reasons he hates soccer: a team can completely dominate and yet not win.
But this is exactly what makes it a great game.
The heartache of watching your team completely dominate, only to concede a goal to a fast break means finding the back of the net is all that matters.
You can have 20 shots and fail to score, while your opponents have one and do, but the same scenario in Aussie rules will see the team with 20 shots always win.
But this doesn’t help the Olyroos, and not much would’ve considering the weak squad they took.
When Archie Thompson, one of the most-overrated players in the A-League, is your "big weapon" you will always struggle.
Compare him to the classy Argentinian players, with the likes of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano and brilliant Juan Riquelme from Boca Juniors, Maradona’s old club in Argentina.
If Liverpool and Barcelona are willing to let their players go to the Olympics, surely we can do a bit better than Fulham’s Adrian Leijer, a defender.
Boca Juniors’ home ground, La Bombonera, is where I first saw Riquelme’s exquisite skills. It is also the only place I felt scared while watching sport.
Body searches on the way in, water cannons, police with three-foot truncheons and 4m barbed wire fences holding back the fans.
I highly recommend the experience to all sport fans.
Having seen the documentaries Snatch and Fight Club it is obvious that Brad Pitt is a fan of boxing.
But few would know that he was representing Australia in the heavyweight division.
After a first-round loss on points, he should probably stick to bare-knuckle boxing, however, where he is the gypsy champion.
