Mall rats bored? You've got to be joking

THE Courier's own cartoonist Ditchy pondered a few weeks ago, why teenagers hang out in the Bridge Mall?

He offered three alternatives:

(a) that they enjoy the fresh air;

(b) they love the smiling face of the security guard; or

(c) they have nowhere else to go.

Well, if I may offer a fourth or fifth alternative, how about;

(d) because they lack the imagination to think of somewhere else to go; or

(e) some actually just want to hang out in a mall?

You hear that phrase all the time. "Kids these days have nowhere to go, nothing to do".

Nothing to do? Are you kidding? With all the cool stuff teenagers have these days? I reckon you'd have to really work at it to be bored. You'd have to be especially gifted at being boring.

Let's say, for argument's sake, it's not raining (I mean, we are talking about Ballarat here, the only time it rains is immediately after I wash my car or when I want to go for a ride on my bike). You could go bike riding, scooter riding, roller blading, roller skating, skateboarding, streetboarding _ anything really other than sitting on your backside.

Can't afford any of that? Probably not looking hard enough because you can buy a fold-up foot scooter for less than $20 at the Reject Shop. But let's go with that view for a second.

Well you can buy just about any ball you want for about $10. So you can kick a footy, soccer ball, play cricket, play basketball, netball, softball, baseball, "downball", hockey, hookey, bocce...

Can't afford to go anywhere to do these things? Well you could head over to Victoria Park, a skatepark, a car park, an oval, a bike track, a bush track.

But who says these teenagers are poor anyway? I have no doubt that some, even those who prowl Bridge Mall, have a collection of technological marvels, like mobile phones, iPhones, iPods and MP3 players, MP4 players, radio controlled cars, boats, trains, planes.

I suppose you can't always rely on the weather, and you can't expect teens to hang around at home. Because there's nothing to do there either, apart from television, Austar, VCR, DVD, Blueray, Playstation, XBox, Gamecube, Wii, Wiifit, computer, Internet, Myspace, Facebook or even just good old-fashioned BOOK.

Teens are bored. Bored? No freakin' way.

No, the reason there are so many teenagers in the mall has nothing to do with having nowhere else to go. It's because they actually want to be there. And if they hang out at the mall and don't do anything wrong, that's cool. It's probably a good, relaxing place to hang out and run into other people, so why shouldn't they?

But among all the teenagers who are perfectly happy just to hang out and look in shops, there is a minority who just want to stuff up everyone else's day. They are being cretins, and that's not got anything to do with either having nowhere to go or having nothing to do.

So let's stop trying to make excuses for them. There's no excuse for treating others like rubbish. You know I'm right about this.

A bit of the generation gap showing here Gav, Maybe we should be burning all the rap CDs like they did the Elvis LPs or closing down the pool halls or maybe just cutting their hair. Do you actualy know any of the teens or their family circumstances who hang out in Bridge Mall, Central Square etc? Hhave you ever been to the YHQ? A shock jock you will never make but an opinion is everyone's right.

Thumbs up! Hit the nail on the head. Some of these kids live in a fantasy world of day-time soap operas. They live for something 'dramatic'. Whether it's a bashing or the latest romance doesn't matter to them. They are insecure and need to always have the support of their 'friends' and so they 'hang-out' together. It has nothing to do with boredom - for them going to the mall is a major social event. To fix the problem, you have to change the sub culture. Let's face it, the issue has been around for years, just the location has changed. Village > Central Square > Bridge Mall.... it's your turn! Who will be next?

Agreed, time to cut the PC crap and call a spade a shovel. I have/had teenage children and for all the ordinary teens out there this is not a criticism of you, hang out with your friends, cruise the shopping centres congregate and have fun you have the right ...enjoy!!! but for the individuals who like to hang around and engage in totally disruptive and anti community behaviour your time is up.....they are cretins who lack the imagination to make their own lives more interesting and it doesn't cost money and it doesn't require a "drop in" centre it requires that they stop putting themselves first and learn they are part of a structure and they must learn to operate in that structure and the bloody do-gooders need to stop giving these cretins excuses to legitimize their behavour.

I totally agree with everything that has been said in this article, but I do object to calling them cretins. I wonder if you know what a cretin is? When I was at school many, many years ago, we had one student who was a cretin. It was explained to us that cretinism is a chronic disease due to absence or deficiency of normal thyroid secretion and charecterised by physical deformity, dwarfism and sometimes idiocy. The person I knew was a dwarf, had deformity of appearance but was highly intelligent and eventually went to university. So, to call these teenagers who hang around the mall and make nuisances of themselves "cretins" is an insult to the poor unfortunate people who actually suffer from this affliction.

To anon, I did not know of that medical definition, so I do take your point. I will use a different term in future. Gav

As will I anon, thanks for the clarification...

Hasn't it occurred to anyone that the teenagers in the mall may just enjoy the ambience of the place and find their interest in observing and meeting people? Not every person has to be dominated by sports or by team games. If they prefer to meet at the mall, let them! At least their activities are visible. A little tolerance and acceptance will go a long way. Lighten up!

Actually you are right on this ... how remarkable!

Marie Jacqueline Lee, nobody is condemning the young people who spend time in the mall and who can maintain a non-threatening presence. It is those who gain pleasure out of making the shopping/leisure experience of others unpleasant with aggressive and offensive behaviour that this article is written about. I think that plenty of tolerance has been shown. Enough tolerance time for action.

Leave this to the police who are responsible for maintaining law and order, particularly with the minority of teenagers who do cause disturbances. Why not first examine the fraternities of sports players and other celebrities, who are setting the bad examples with their drug abuses, drunken brawls, sexual assaults and girlfriend bashings? It is this behaviour that some teenagers emulate.
