ABC Learning Centres: Charities take over

09 Dec, 2009 12:09 AM
A BUYER has been found for Ballarat's six ABC Learning childcare centres.

The centres at Alfredton, Mt Helen, Mt Clear, Ballarat, Delacombe and Wendouree are among 678 across Australia to be sold to non-profit syndicate GoodStart.

The company has been formed by leading charities Social Ventures Australia, Mission Australia, the Benevolent Society and the Brotherhood of St Laurence

The venture has been financially backed by NAB and the Federal Government.

Pending the exchanging of contracts before Christmas, the sale is hoped to be completed early next year.

Ballarat's centres were put on the market in September, after ABC Learning Centres was placed into receivership last November.

The company, founded by entrepreneur Eddy Groves, owed $1.6 billion.

As a result, Sebastopol ABC Learning centre was forced to close last December, leaving parents shocked and angry at having to relocate their children.

The Bacchus Marsh centre received government funding to operate until March 31 this year.

The remaining six Ballarat centres have been operated under the management of the bank-appointed receivers McGrathNicol.

Under GoodStart, the centres will be run under the ABC Learning banner.

GoodStart has offered to manage the remaining 26 centres across Australia while McGrathNicol finalises arrangements for those locations.

Company spokeswoman Maree Walk yesterday said they would operate the centres to the highest standards of education and care.

She said profits would be reinvested back into programs, improving childcare access and quality.

"Today marks a new start for parents, children and staff at ABC Learning centres around the country," Ms Walk said.

Hmm, there seem to be a number of religious charities amongst the new backers. Let's hope they don't use their ownership to indoctrinate kids too young to choose for themselves.
