Geelong Rd upgrades must be fast-tracked

Geelong Rd upgrades must be fast-tracked

22 Feb, 2010 12:39 AM
FIX Geelong Rd soon or face even more traffic hold-ups.

That was the finding of a study commissioned by the Ballarat City Council last year and released this week.

South Ward Councillor Ben Taylor said the road was not coping in peak times

"The demand on the road is getting to the point where it just cannot handle it,'' Cr Taylor said.

A report to be considered by council tomorrow night recommends lobbying the State Government to bring forward $7.1 million of works planned for the road.

Instead of up to 15 years for some changes, the upgrades should be done in the next two years, the report said.

The CPG Australia analysis said if the timetable for works such as intersection upgrades was not sped up, increased demand would mean more congestion and delays for motorists.

Cr Taylor said demand from schools, businesses and housing developments along the route would push it to breaking point in five years.

"The analysis shows that if action isn't taken soon, traffic increases will cause sections of the road to fail by 2015."

The fallout would also affect other roads in the area, in particular Yankee Flat Rd.

Traffic numbers on that road were expected to jump by 85 per cent in the next 20 years.

Cr Taylor said the first priority should be too fix the Whitehorse Rd roundabout.

At the moment, that is not scheduled to happen for between five and 10 years.

The report has put the cost of that work alone at $1.8 million.

Cr Taylor said the road currently services 2870 properties in the area and was crucial for access in emergencies, such as the New Year's Eve fires.

The 2007 Ballarat Road Transport Strategy showed in 2005-06 that the road was carrying 14,700 vehicles each day.

That figure was expected to grow to 22,000 by 2031.

Geelong Rd is a problem time bomb ticking away. Rip out the roundabouts and put in traffic lights. I'm sick of Ballarat being a round about city, parden the pun. There is enough room to make sections of the road out to the uni four lanes; this would stop the problem of slow coaches who clogg up traffic flow.

Didn't Howard say the government was more concerned with fixing Melbourne issues? The Courier should repeat that quote everytime this story runs.

I don't live out at Mt Clear or Mt Helen, however I have used Main Road. In the wake of last year's devastating fires I would hate to think if a large fire broke out in that area how people could safely evacuate.

The council has been aware of the traffic congestion on Main Road for years but do very little about it. Fixing up Main Road is like relocating the cattle yards or making a decision on the Civic Centre!

I will bet a dollar to a cent that Mair street is finished, the council moved into the civic centre and the CBD redeveloped into some sort of shopping eutopia before Main Road even gets talked about.

Traffic lights in place of the roundabout, then within (less than) 50m traffic lights making right hand turns easy during peak time out of Recreation Road then another set at Damascus? Hmmm.

I've often thought that a road going through Magpie would provide an alternative route to the uni, via Sebas and its double-laned road.

And exactly just how long does this "congestion" last each day? Does anyone actually know? Has it ever been surveyed to ascertain? Lot of people seem to have an opinion about the "congestion" but I've never actually seen any data. I drive it both ways every day and, sorry, but the afternoon school "congestion" lasts maybe 10 minutes. Big deal!

Yes fix it, it needs it. But just don't let the geniuses that are "fixing" Sturt St West get anywhere near it.
