THREE Ballarat locals are hoping to make a difference to Aids orphans and former child soldiers in Uganda. Katie Fellowes, Magda Carpenter and Jonathan Owen are heading overseas next week to spend two-and-a-half weeks helping build a home for orphans of Watoto - an organisation famous for its touring children's choir. The trio, members of Ballarat's Cityside Christian Church, have raised $20,000 towards building a house for eight orphans and a carer. They will join a group of 15 from a Horsham church for the trip. Mrs Fellowes said Watoto cared for 1700 children. The group would also travel to Gulu in the north of Uganda, where they would present gifts to former child soldiers. "For me personally, I just want to be able to give something to children who don't have anything," Mrs Fellowes said."This is not something they have chosen for themselves - and we get to be able to make a difference."Mrs Fellowes said she decided to fundraise for Watoto after attending a women's conference at Hillsong in Sydney. She said the Ballarat community had come on board with 17 local businesses getting involved.
