SIX new jobs will be created in Ballarat to build trains for Melbourne.
The UnitedGroup Rail recently advertised for six positions to complete the fit-out contract for 19 new six-car X'Trapolis trains for the metropolitan fleet.
It is believed the two-year contract will created significant work opportunities, with more expected in coming months.
The roles advertised include production supervisor, quality and safety co-ordinator, inwards goods inspector, procurement expeditor and two planner/scheduler positions.
UGL Rail chief executive Dean Jenkins said the company wanted to use the skilled people in Ballarat that have recently been made redundant.
"The success of our previous projects has contributed to the win here, proving our performance credentials, access to the right skills and the ... support of the community," he said. "We employ local people
and use local suppliers.
"In going through this recruitment drive, we believe the recent downturn in heavy manufacturing may be resulting in an influx of skilled individuals (providing) us with a high calibre of applicants."
The shells for the car bodies will be built in Poland based on designs from the French company, ALSTOM.
They will then be shipped to Ballarat for completion.
This includes insulation, flooring, wiring, under-frame equipment, bogies, windows, air conditioning, CCTV and interior furnishings as well as quality assurance, testing and commissioning.
