25-metre pool at Eureka closed for health reasons

24 Jan, 2012 11:50 PM
POOL-goers wanting to escape the heat yesterday morning were unable to use the Eureka Pool’s 25-metre pool, after it opened nearly four hours late due to extra filtration needs.

Ballarat City Council yesterday confirmed the YMCA-managed pool was not available for public use until 10.15am.

Council’s growth and development director Eric Braslis said the complex’s toddler and 50-metre pools were open from the usual time of 6.30am.

“The later opening was to allow extra filtration of the pool to ensure it was ready for public use during peak swimming times,” Mr Braslis said.

A Health Department spokesman confirmed the pool had been temporarily closed but said he did not know why. The Health Department in Ballarat referred queries to the council.

The pool was the centre of community protests last November when it was revealed that the McKenzie family, who had run it for 39 years, had been dumped in favour of the YMCA as part of council’s compulsory competitive tendering process.

Yesterday Peter McKenzie told The Courier that in all the years he managed the pool it had never been shut down.

“None of our pools have been closed, especially during this time of year,” he said. “We tested the pools four times per day and made sure that everything was up to date.”

Golden Point resident Jonathon Wilson said the pool was “filthy” when he visited it on Monday with his wife, five-year-old niece and four-year-old son.

“I was just sitting down reading the paper and my wife came over and said we need to get the kids out because the pool was filthy,” he said.

“You couldn’t see the black lines (on the bottom) at all. There was just crap floating all over it. I don’t think it’s safe like that.”

The YMCA was yesterday unavailable for comment on why the extra filtration – used to keep pools free of dirt, debris and bacteria – was needed. Mr Braslis said the council regretted any inconvenience caused by the later opening time.

The YMCA also runs the Black Hill, Brown Hill and Buninyong pools, as well as the Ballarat Aquatic Centre.

The YMCA takes over and there are filtration issues. So begins the downfall of this once beautifully run pool. How many more issues will arise over this and the coming summers due to poor and inept management?

This is what I love about Ballarat. So little bad news here that the newspaper has to give us a story about someone cleaning their pool.

Do you want to watch me clean my car next week?

And so it all starts to unfold.

Seriously, why am I not supsised by this?

What an absolute disgrace to risk the health and wellbeing of our vulnerable children and young adolescents to be exposed to such second rate conditions and filth. You would think that the YMCA would operate a pool to a high standard and want to maximise operational compacity on a 32 degree day, not vindicate a small section of patronage who I am sure will not return to the pool.

Well i was there yesturday, we came at 10.15 and was told it was closed for another half an hour so we waited and waited, it wasnt until more around 11.30-12.00 until it opened, the pool closed sign actually came down once so we went in and two minutes later were told we couldnt swim again so they put the sign up.....finally got to have a swim with the kids around that time then.....though mind you it was dirty and we all said that this wouldnt have happened if the Mackenzie's were here......Hmmmm

Was at Pool Monday night and noticed water was a bit cloudier than normal and the pool was packed, back again Tuesday @ 12.30, water better and the pool was packed again. This problem exsisted when the McKenzie were there, why are they covering up, anything to make a mountian out of a mole hill. All these people carrying on, never going back again, is this the worst thing that has ever happened to them, I doubt not.

I never go there anyway. The pool I have in my yard is adequate for my children's needs. it is 2 meters in diameter and I deflate it after each use.
