50-metre indoor pool back on Ballarat agenda

50-metre indoor pool back on Ballarat agenda

10 Sep, 2010 01:53 AM
A 50-metre indoor swimming pool appears to be back on the Ballarat City Council's agenda.

The council is soon to receive a report into the city's future needs for swimming facilities.

Sustainability executive manager Ian Rossiter told an ordinary council meeting this week the feasibility of a 50m indoor pool would be one of the issues looked at in the report.

Swimming clubs have pushed for several years for such a facility to be included in the redevelopment of the Ballarat Aquatic Centre.

They argued the lack of an indoor 50m pool put young competition swimmers at a disadvantage to their city counterparts in 50m or long-course events and that top class athletes could be lost to Melbourne

clubs.

The $4.5 million redevelopment, which is due to be finished by October, included two new aquatic education and rehabilitation pools.

But the council believed the cost of building and maintaining a 50m pool was too high.

South ward Councillor Des Hudson said a 50m indoor pool would be discussed as an option as the city's population grew.

"The issue I think will always come down to the costs of a 50m pool against what the majority of people are using the pool for," Cr Hudson said.

He said when the council drew up its previous aquatic strategy, surveys indicated a majority of pool users went to Ballarat's pools for recreation and not lap swimming.

"Our experience and knowledge shows lap swimmers are probably less than five per cent of total aquatic users."

Ballarat Gold Swimming Club president Anthony Hoffmann said the city needed a 50m indoor pool to match Melbourne facilities and regional centres such as Geelong and Bendigo.

Ballarat has been behind the eight ball for years not having a 50m pool, I could not believe the council could have been so short sighted over the years when they had the chance to upgrade the aquatic center to 50m, then went ahead and let the pool remain at 25m. I'm sure Ballarat could have produced some top class swimmers over the years if only they had proper training facilities. People don't lap swim because they haven't got the facility to do so.This is a spurious argument and shows lack of understanding the needs of competition swimmers.

You have got to be kidding me! They have wasted millions on the basket case that the aquatic centre will be putting in ANOTHER hydro pool, like the one that BOTH hospitals already have, when the simple answer would have been a true aquatic centre. Perhaps this backward thinking council might consider someone in this city other than people aged 60+. Melton have, Geelong have, yet all we get is a couple of bike races a year and the overall desire to become Melbourne's retirement village. Sick and tired of it, and so is everyone else

How they the council, cant justify a 50m pool, is typical of politics gone wrong. Cant afford the maintenance, cant afford to staff it, Cant afford to have criminal activity, Cant afford to be seen as improving the local facilities without debates, as all the councilors are so busy propping themselves up to be seen, they would never use it anyway! Im sure these councils got permits for swimming pools in there back yard. And I assure you they will never be seen there as a patron. Get with the program, and make the 50m pool a WAVE pool. OOps that might make money! Unacceptable to show a profit.

Sport gets such a good run in this town. Whereis it going to go? Kilometres away from the Eastern half of the city again? As a ratepayer I wish I had a choice in this. The pool will be a massive amount of money for a lucky few, compared to the rest of the population.

Surely if Echua & Bendigo can have an indoor 50m pool then so can we? Think of all the advantages for not only swimming clubs but football clubs etc. Maybe putting a roof on an existing pool (Wendouree) might be a cheaper option? Ballarat could then host state & national events which would be great for tourism. How much was spent on the lake with the rowing works?

When will council make sure that the rate paying public have footpaths around their neighbourhoods. I have watched people pushing wheelchairs on grassed areas toward McCallum House over the years near Alfredton and wondered when will the footpaths be laid. Come on council get the current infrastructure correct before embarking upon other ideas with my rates.

Anyone else got deja vue? Not "several years" but decades this has been discussed. When will we finally get a council that just does it? Wasn't there a rumour that Shayne Resse was setting someting up in Delacombe? The courier might want to ask her if that's true/

Dont be so greedy. The lake is near full, take advantage of it.

The Council seems to be doing everything in its power to avoid building a 50m pool despite many benefits it would bring to Ballarat. The new pools have been placed on the site almost deliberately so that a 50m pool would not fit readily. Already the tone of this report is negative However there is great need to expand swimming facilities within Ballarat. Most pools in this city are running close to full capacity and particularly the Aquatic Centre which often finds groups competing for extremely limited pool space. This wiil not be greatly alleviated by the new complex additions. The current Aquatic Centre pool does not strictly adhere to conditions for top class competition. This leaves Ballarat sadly lacking in the ability to host top events from juniors to Masters Games. There would be great benefit to Ballarat businesses if we can attract these families from other parts of Victoria to Ballarat. Ballarat and Western Victoria desperately needs a 50m indoor pool.

Excuse me for not knowing, but what are they doing up at the Aquatic Centre now? I thought they were extending the existing 25m pool to 50m. If they aren't what are they doing?
