70 firefighters bring Clunes grass fire under control

17 Jan, 2012 08:23 AM
MORE than 70 firefighters battled a large grass fire north of Clunes yesterday, which burnt out 20 hectares of grassland.

Country Fire Authority District 15 Operations Officer Mal Jones said 12 tankers were sent to fight the blaze, which erupted near an old quarry just after 5pm.

He said crews took some time to contain the fire, which was listed as “out of control” for more than an hour.

“This one actually took them a little while — probably two hours for it to be brought fully under control,” he said. “It was definitely one of the bigger ones we’ve had lately.”

Mr Jones said Delilah the Erickson air crane was on hand to help ground crews, filling up with water at nearby farm dams and dumping it to halt the spread of flames.

Meanwhile, Victorians in high-risk bushfire regions are being urged to review their fire plans with high temperatures and northerly winds tipped in coming weeks.

Premier Ted Baillieu said there was no room for complacency despite two weeks of cooler weather.

“The benign weather that we’ve had over recent weeks should not in any way allow Victorians to be complacent about what lies ahead,” he said.

I think someone should investigate why the CFA website went into meltdown during the fire. I know that you shouldn't rely on it to tell you what is going on but it was impossible to read the advice about the fire. Most of the time the incident page just kept trying to load and when it did, it came up blank. The advice would not load at all. I tried to open it with two different web browsers on my laptop and also on my Iphone and it just wouldn't work.
