The series, starring Craig McLachlan and Nadine Garner, will start filming next month.
It revolves around Dr Lucien Blake, who returns home to Ballarat in 1959 to take over his late father’s medical practice.
But Dr Blake (McLachlan) is also a “keeper of secrets and a solver of mysteries”.
The series is written by John Alsop and will be produced by Tony Wright and George Adams of December Media, which mainly produces documentaries, live-action dramas and animated children’s television shows.
December Media is particularly renowned for its large-scale historical documentaries, including the four-part $4.5 million series Captain Cook: Obsession and Discovery, Revealing Gallipoli and the popular factual series Family Footsteps.
In a statement, December Media said The Doctor Blake Mysteries would be produced in partnership with UK-based ITV Global and ABC Australia.
The statement reads: “Dr Lucien Blake – sharp as a tack and sly as a fox, a conduit of secrets and lies, a moral compass in an age of change, a trusted voice in untrustworthy times, a solver of human riddles, an assessor of death both natural and unnatural, a man cursed with the absolute first-hand knowledge of the scale of man’s inhumanity to man and a detective of dark acts.”
The series will be filmed in Ballarat and Melbourne between April and August. No locations or exact filming dates were available yesterday from December Media. The Doctor Blake Mysteries will screen on ABC1 later this year.
