PUPILS at St Thomas More Primary School in Alfredton sure know a thing or two about sustainable living. The grade 5 and 6 pupils recently finished a term-long project where they set out to learn about sustainable living and design their own sustainable homes.Throughout the term, the burning question on their minds was “how can we contribute to a sustainable environment now and into the future?”Grade 5 teacher Michelle Gittings said the students had showed great enthusiasm, both in creating models of their own sustainable houses and creating sustainable showbags.“They all loved it. They have done so well,” she said.Grade 5 student Ellen Simpson, who created a sustainable home, complete with a backyard and shed, with Madalyn Scholten, said the project had been great fun.Their project included water tanks made out of aluminium cans, a compost heap, water saving shower heads and a range of energy saving devices.
