Application lodged to save Ballarat's Civic Hall

03 Sep, 2010 02:10 AM
BALLARAT historical group has lodged a formal application to have the Civic Hall added to the Victorian Heritage Register.

Ballarat Heritage Watch hopes Heritage Victoria will step in to ensure Ballarat City Council cannot demolish the building.

The group's president Anne Beggs-Sunter said the Civic Hall was the only example of a 1950s public building in the modernist style in Ballarat.

Dr Beggs-Sunter said it was crucial the building was preserved.

In June Ballarat City Council endorsed a recommendation to demolish the building.

But Dr Beggs-Sunter said the community would be better served if the building was retained.

"In environmental terms, it's much better to adapt old buildings to new purposes rather than using all that energy in destroying it and using new materials to build it again," she said.

The building has not been used since 2002 although it was once a hub of activity for Ballarat residents. There is a heritage overlay in the precinct where the building is located but its historical significance is now under review.

Dr Beggs-Sunter said there was no deadline for Heritage Victoria to decide if the building should be added to the Heritage Register but she hoped a decision would be reached soon.

Although Ballarat City Council approved the recommendation to demolish the building, mayor Judy Verlin said she would welcome Heritage Victoria's input on the building.

Cr Verlin said any application to develop the site would be advertised publicly and the community consulted on the proposed uses and designs.

"Hopefully by going through this process now we'll be able to determine once and for all if the Civic Hall does have any historical or architectural merit," she said.

Glag to see I'm not the only one who thinks that our heritage is more than just a handful of Bluestone buildings. There was a great article in The Age last week on exactly this topic. http://theage.domain.com.au/real- estate-news/modernist-design-find ing-new-followers-20100828-13wy8. html Furthermore, on the City of Ballarat's own website, they have defined heritage as, "Heritage is something that gives us a sense of place and informs us about who we are and how our society has developed over time." It doesn't say heritage is building that were built at the turn of the century, as so many seem to believe.

Another"boys from the bush" type move by the Ballarat hysterical group. I've failed to see this group trying to save significant homes around the lake being demolished in the last few years for ugly buildings which do nothing for the area other than looking out of place.

Give it up... How about a Rate Payers Postal Vote.... Let the people decide. Take the pressure off the council and let the residents make the decision. After all it is out civic hall.. Our Money and should be our choice. I for one just want something done not fussed what just do something with the site that improves Ballarat.

Good for Anne Beggs Sunter and her group. It's just as well Ballarat has people interested and strong enough to try to override some very questionable propositions made.

Has anyone noticed that when commercial interests were talking about demolishing it and building hotels and offices and shops the hysterical mob led by Dr Ann were no where to be seen? It is an ugly eyesore and should go, who put them in charge of Ballarat? I agree with Whynot, put it to a ratepayers vote.

So does the historical society have any plans for the civic hall if its approved? Is it just going to sit empty for years on end again, because no one has the money too repair it. Just pull it down and be done with it! Let the people of Ballarat vote!

so If it will be on the Heritage List does that mean nothing can be done to it or it can not be used. Otherwise it just seems the site would be going to waste. I dont care if it is kept or not but as long as the site is being useful and not going to waste.

Give me a break! What is there to save? A hideous bunker without any redeeming features. It looks awful and is awful. Put it to the vote and put an end to this rubbish. Bring in the bull dozers.
