Arrests mar footy final

13 Sep, 2009 10:57 PM
POLICE officers were injured during an alcohol-fuelled incident at the Central Highlands Football League grand final on Saturday.

Five men were arrested and will face a variety of charges, including drunkenness, resisting arrest, assaulting police and discharging missiles.

The trouble erupted during the final's third quarter at Eureka Stadium.

Sergeant Damien Ferrari, of Ballarat Police, said the arrests were made from within a group of spectators watching the game from under the scoreboard. They allegedly threw cans at police.

Sgt Ferrari said those responsible were asked by police to move on. "Several of our members were hit by cans thrown by people in the crowd," he said.

A number of police officers were injured when attempting to evict the troublemakers. Pepper spray was used a number of times to help subdue the offenders.

Police numbers steadily increased as officers from around the region were called in to help at the match between Daylesford and Hepburn.

Sgt Ferrari said fears the aggressive behaviour would escalate resulted in 10 Melbourne officers from the Police Force Response Unit attending.

CHFL president Merv McKay said this year the league had doubled the number of security around the ground to help prevent anti-social and aggressive behaviour. "We were told by security they had alerted the Gordon Football

Club, who was running the licence, that there was a problem developing."

He was also advised about 4.30pm that police had ordered alcohol sales to be stopped.

A debrief of the incident by district licensing inspector, Inspector Gerry Rudkins, will be conducted this week.

Meanwhile, police were called to the City Oval yesterday after a controversial finish to a junior football grand final.

Ballarat Football Club was initially declared winners of the Ballarat Football League under 16.5 grand final against Sebastopol by a goal.

But, sections of the crowd grew agitated when it was found goal umpires' scores did not match those of the time-keepers. League officials ordered a review of the final quarter footage while players were still on the ground.

Eventually, the teams were told to play another five minutes, with the Swans again prevailing, this time by a point.

This is a disgrace! More police were needed and less alcohol is a must. Next year they should have limits on the amount served by maybe placing some sort of permenant marker on the customer which cannot be removed easily.

I saw the police response vehicles heading towards Ballarat as I was heading inbound on the Western Fwy, thought there might have been a major accident. Who would have thought typical drunken bogan footy fans? Just like the tragic incident in Geelong. Guys, it's only a stupid game. Is it really worth it?

Re: City Oval incident. Mention should be made that this occurance was after emotion- filled teenagers were forced to wait a LONG time for officals to correct paid workers mistakes, only to have them fail again. Terrible for all involved, but nothing like the happenings at the CHFL!

No trouble like that out at Learmonth for the netball grand finals.

The CHFL seems to have become a hotbed for violence in recent years. If more action was taken by those in charge when incidents occur it would deter futher silly acts taking place. Certain clubs seem to be a law unto themselves, not suggesting the two playing on Saturday were, but some others close by geographically have so many incidents taking place and are never pulled up for it by the league. Sets a bad example.

Too many 'fans' of sporting events now seem to think that rules that are in place don't seem to apply to them. It's under age sport people! Alcohol is not permitted to be brought into these types of venues - most of the time you can purchase it there. Also, the 'adults' in the crowd should have more respect for themselves, the players, umpires, the children at the sporting grounds and so many others. Everyone is pushing for better sportsmanship on the playing fields - when is it going to happen off the playing field? People, if you want to get drunk - STAY HOME!

Just another example of police having to pick up the pieces and deal with drunken idiots after too much alcohol has been consumed. There needs to be much tighter controls on the supply of alcohol, both at football games and nightclubs in this city. It should not be up to the police to sort out the mess all the time. Who serves the alcohol to these people in the first place? I think the case for light beer only at football games and a 2am lock out is growing stronger by the day!

WRFL div 1 grand final on Saturday - light beer and a high police and security presence following last year's dust ups. Perhaps the BFL and CHFL can take a leaf out of the same book?

Saturdays events were great the football match was great very discipline from both sides hepburn and daylesford. although i couldnt say much about the supporters in one area of the oval. mostly people who were under age and not even there to watch the grandfinal, when i passed through that area i saw people very very drunken and disordly, young teenagers dancing on the back of utes to loud blaring music!! This is a massive problem that needs to be cracked down on, you go to the football to watch it not bloody dance on the back of a car and get drunk!! NO ALCOHOL at Football i say, after all its a sport doesnt need to be associated with drinks, have the bar open after the game for a couple drinks! not during
