Bacchus Marsh coal mine could be better than Latrobe Valley: claims

01 Dec, 2011 11:41 PM
BACCHUS Marsh brown coal could be of a better quality than that of La Trobe Valley, preliminary results have revealed.

Mantle Mining, which is currently conducting a controversial 15 hole drilling program in the region, has released the results of its laboratory analysis of the first four holes.

However, Moorabool Environment Group president Kate Tubbs said history showed that Bacchus Marsh coal was not of a high quality.

Mantle Mining operations manager Callum Lamont said the company was pleased with preliminary results however the report was only “indicative”.

“The quality seems to suggest the coal is of a equal or higher grade than the Latrobe valley coal,” Mr Lamont said.

Mr Lamont said a better idea about the quality of the coal could only be achieved once all the 15 holes had been tested.

“We hope to finish (drilling) before the end of February ... and another three months ... to model the data.”

However, Ms Tubbs said the report was overly optimistic.

“The reports that they are putting forward are for their (Mantle Mining’s) shareholders so they have got to be optimistic,” Ms Tubbs said.

“I doubt that the coal is as wonderful as they have said it is going to be.”

just who does Kate Tubbs think she is.

Clearly Kate Tubbs has not bothered to familiarise herself with the realities of the JORC code. To claim that a company would deliberately produce an overly optimistic report to mislead investors is a serious accusation indeed.

A coal mine would be a very good idea! Why don't people want jobs and economic development?

No better place for a big dirty hole in the ground. If the coal is good, why not bring some balance to the state's coal-burning activities? The Latrobe Valley has had it too good for too long - burn some dinosaurs on this side of Melbourne! Both the state and the local government have shown they hate renewable or clean energy, so this is what'll be required...

Wow lets introduce a carbon tax and then let companies mine more brown coal. How dumb has this country become? How will $$$$ reduce polution when brown coal exploration is allowed???

Look at the results James, they are posted on the Mantale Mining site and compare them with the yields from Yallourn. Some-one is telling porkies, and as the Mantle share price has dropped to 5c a share, they are fooling no-one, except the gullible journals who write about them.

Digger, you are actually wrong. Coal rank is based on as received basis and as the announcement said the lower moisture content and higher net wet calorific values indicate that the Bacchus Marsh coal is possibly of a higher rank than the coals of the Latrobe Valley. If you compare Yallourn as you suggest, the (ar) CV is 6.9 vs 8.6 for Bacchus Marsh.
