Back on the buses for weeks

30 Aug, 2005 10:45 PM
BALLARAT commuters will again be forced onto buses with the Melbourne railway line likely to be closed for more than two months.

V/Line yesterday confirmed the line would probably close for about 10 weeks later this year as work on the Regional Fast Rail Project continues.

Opposition transport spokesman Terry Mulder said project documents showed a total shutdown was planned from October 1 to December 10.

He has accused the State Government of trying to hide the planned closures, however, V/Line says the dates are yet to be confirmed.

"(Transport Minister) Mr (Peter) Batchelor is deliberately hiding this next raft of shutdowns from commuters," Mr Mulder said.

"He is trying to get away with releasing the details during the football finals, hoping that no one will notice."

V/Line spokeswoman Dionne Lew said further line closures were being negotiated but that it was important to ensure information was accurate and reliable before releasing it to the public.

"We are expecting a closure but, as usual, we don't actually give out that information when the dates aren't confirmed by all the parties.

"There is a closure planned but at this stage the dates aren't locked in."

A spokeswoman for Mr Batchelor said it was irresponsible for the Opposition to pre-empt line closures before they were finalised as it would only create confusion.

"The government has always said there would be further shuts of the Ballarat line," spokeswoman Kate Leonard said.

"The Liberal Opposition will take any opportunity they can to criticise the Regional Fast Rail Project because they hate the fact that the Bracks Government is investing in regional Victoria."

The Ballarat-Melbourne line has been shut for a total of about 16 weeks since the end of 2003 due to fast rail upgrades.

During that time, 29 level crossings and more than 70km of tracks have been upgraded, almost 100,000 concrete sleepers have been laid and two bridges built.
