Ballarat cancer centre needs support

12 Jan, 2010 12:39 AM
BALLARAT MHR Catherine King is urging the community to support an application for a $55 million cancer centre to be built in Ballarat.

Last year the Rudd Government committed $560 million from the Health and Hospitals Fund to establish a network of about 10 best-practice regional cancer centres.

Ballarat's proposal was submitted on Friday and was developed by Ballarat Health Services, St John of God Hospital and Austin Health, in conjunction with the Victorian Government.

If successful, the centre would be at the Base Hospital and would include four radiotherapy bunkers and room to expand, if necessary.

"We have put in an extremely strong application but this is a competitive process," Ms King said.

"Organisations across Australia are competing for funding.

"It would certainly help us send a loud and very strong message if members of the community actively voiced their support for this important facility."

Ms King has encouraged people to write to her office and directly to the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, to support the bid.

The proposal has the support of the local hospitals.

"Our plan is to provide for the cancer treatment needs for this city, and the region, well into the future," BHS chief executive officer Andrew Rowe said.

"We have all been working on this for nearly two years," St John of God Hospital chief executive officer John Fogarty agreed.

"The goal was to create a well-thought-out and detailed solution to the challenge of caring for cancer patients long-term."

You can send your message of support to Catherine.King.MP@aph.gov.au or to Minister Roxon on Nicola.Roxon.MP@aph.gov.au

Lett ers can also be sent to Ms King's electorate office at 5 Lydiard St Nth, Ballarat, 3350.

Good to see these politicians doing something for the people for a change! We need better cancer services in this town. Everyone should support this!

This is a good thing, isn't it? I can't understand why anyone would object. It's a long-term solution to a critical problem. How we take care of sick people in Ballarat goes to the heart of how we are as a community.

Well Devstar, there is a politician who does do something for the people, Catherine King. We really need to get behind Ms King, and push to obtain the cancer services for Ballarat. I wonder what Senator McGauran and his new friend Mr Banwell, are doing to help this?. I can't recall Mr Howard visiting Ballarat to give some Funding.

What do you mean Margo? Haven't the Liberals already supported this too? It's a win win that I don't believe. All we need now are a few crazy Greens to back it. i find it interesting The Courier is backing it hard. Maybe they are doing the work???? Who cares either way! Now we need to make sure the contracts to build go to local tradies like my husband for a change!!!! I'm sick of us not getting jobs

Don't believe what you read people. My friend works at St John's hospital and reckons the Libs want to build a cancer centre there. It makes sense as there is already a cancer building at St John's so it would save money to expand. Once again, the Labor Party is wasting money on white elephants.

This is great if it can be accessed by the whole community within the public health system. My concern is that some of this technology will be placed in St Johns and you would have to pay huge out of pocket expenses for some tests, as in the PET scanner funded for placement in the private sector! There is currently expansion at the Base Hospital - let's hope there is room for this here.

scotty, two things. There was NO government funding to put the PET scanner into St Johns. Second patients pay NOTHING to have a PET scan done with us where there is a governemnt rebate for the test.
