Ballarat Catholic school teachers begin 2012 with mass

01 Feb, 2012 07:27 PM
CATHOLIC teachers across Ballarat celebrated the start of the school year with a mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral yesterday.

Catholic Education Office executive director Peter Kerwan said the yearly ritual allowed teachers and principals from the region’s Catholic schools to get together.

“We had teachers and principals from 17 primary schools and three secondary schools in Ballarat region,” Mr Kerwan said. “It lasted about an hour.

“It also gave the opportunity to teachers to meet with colleagues from other schools.”

Celebrated by Father Barry Ryan, Father Justin Driscoll and Father Adrian McInerney, the mass included a welcoming address by the new director of Catholic Education Audrey Brown.

The Ballarat Diocese, he said, extended from the Murray to the sea, with 53 primary schools and 11 secondary schools, providing education for 17,000 students, an increase from previous years.

“This year we welcome new principals at St Michael’s Primary School, Daylesford; St Mary’s Primary School, Donald; St Patrick’s Primary School, Stawell and St Paul’s Primary School, Mildura,” Mr Kerwan said.

There's also an article today on government schools running out of money. Look at the photo above. Just look at it.

@Sam - no use taking a swing at private and catholic schools - you need to focus on the State Government funding as far as i can see most of the catholic and private schools also raise money to fund towards ther new building infrastructure, maybe this could be an angle for the public schools to look at

SAM - yes I am looking , what I see is a congregation of committed individuals who work for a living at a workplace like everybody else.

Did I notice what you were pointing out ?

Private school fundraising is mainly from my taxes not cakes stalls. And I don't like it. If you don't want to use the train you don't get a govt contribution for your car!

If it wasn't for private schools getting a subsidy then taxes would rise to pay for all the extra schools and teachers etc.

A lot of people pay for things they don't use through their taxes whether they like it or not. It's how our country is.

@Aussiedale would care to expand on that theory? It makes no sense but I'm curious

I see about 3 to 3.5 million dollars worth of building.

I see a room full of blind people stumbling around claiming to have found a black cat that isn't there.

And tonight on the way home I will see some public schools and imagine what the 3 million dollars could do across them.
