FIRST aid officers treated just 10 people at Ballarat Turf Club yesterday, prompting praise from St John Ambulance Australia.
First Aid commander Richard Clarke said the numbers of people seeking treatment for heat-related ailments was far below expectations, suggesting many people had acted responsibly in taking preventative measures.
"Generally the crowd has been very well behaved, people didn't appear to have too much to drink and generally everybody has been quite healthy in their celebrations today," he said.
"At the two first aid posts we treated mostly minor issues, a bit of asthma, some hayfever, a few cuts and things like that but very little for dehydration."
Mr Clarke said race days and their traditional adherence to fashion often brought some minor work for St John's officers.
"There was a lot of self care going on which we don't tend to keep track of, a few blisters, minor cuts and a few heat-related illnesses such as headaches and dizziness but otherwise the crowd was really good.
"We always expect more than this to happen, so it's pleasing when we don't need to do much."
However, he said not all racegoers were completely prepared for the conditions.
"Some people were definitely not prepared, I saw quite a bit of sunburn, but I just think people tended to pace themselves which was good for us and the police."
