SCENE: Police outside Ballarat High School in Gillies Street yesterday after a teacher was hurt while trying to break up a fight involving several youths.

A BALLARAT High School teacher was taken to hospital after he was allegedly assaulted while trying to stop a fight on school grounds yesterday.Police alleged a group of between 10 and 15 youths went to Ballarat High School at 12.45pm to fight with a small group of students.Witnesses said the group, which did not include students from the school, jumped the Gillies Street fence and started assaulting the Ballarat High School students. Two teachers tried to intervene and and were assaulted. IT teacher Daryl Cavender was taken to St John of God Hospital with minor injuries.A 14-year-old Delacombe boy was arrested in Victoria Park, a short distance from the scene. He was charged with affray and recklessly causing serious injury and bailed to appear in a Children’s Court in August.A year 11 student who witnessed the alleged assault said he was having a drink at the bubble taps when he saw the group jump the fence and approach a group of four and start the fight. He described Mr Cavender as a “good guy” and a great teacher.Ballarat Police Sergeant Todd Sparkman said the students were being assaulted before the teachers stepped in to break up the fight, before the teachers themselves were assaulted.Nobody was armed with weapons.“The group was involved in an argument with a number of students at the school, before the students were assaulted,” he said.Sergeant Sparkman said the group split up and fled when police arrived at the scene. He said police would continue investigations into the incident.A spokesperson from Ballarat High School said she was “disappointed” that the youths, who were not students at the school, started a fight on school grounds.“Fortunately none of our students or teachers were seriously injured,” she said. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development said it would assist police with the investigation.“We are always concerned when non-students cause trouble on school grounds — it’s just not acceptable,” a DEECD spokesperson said.Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Ballarat Police on 5336 6000 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
