Ballarat Liberal candidate silent on gag order

30 Jul, 2010 11:50 PM
BALLARAT federal Liberal candidate Mark Banwell will not say whether he has been gagged by his party.

Speculation has been mounting that Mr Banwell had been instructed to avoid media interviews after describing Labor's education revolution program as a "potential holocaust" while campaigning last week.

The phrase earnt a rebuke from Liberal leader Tony Abbott, and Mr Banwell apologised for the reference in a statement released the following day.

Since then, he has made few public statements.

In the past three days, media releases from Mr Banwell's office have been issued on Coalition commitments to boost spending on childcare and lower company tax rates.

But when The Courier attempted to speak with him about the releases this week, phone calls were not returned.

Yesterday, his media officer Joe McCracken said Mr Banwell would not be available for interview until next week.

He is scheduled to appear for a doorstop interview in Bacchus Marsh on Monday morning.

Mr Banwell is understood to have spent yesterday campaigning in Ballarat.

Banwell wake up to yourself, get back talking about the issues. Kath King has been a disappointment for people in BAllarat, factory closures, pink batts, scholl halls rorts, come get in to her!

Banwell may have made a small mistake, but that is nothing compared to King's record in this town. Rudd - Gillard has be most wasteful. I'm not voting ALP again especially after the way inwhich Kev 07 was dumped, now all the leaks

Come on Ben wake up to yourself. Banwell is a poor choice of a Candidate when he can't spek to the media. What hope would us in Ballarat have if he was elected in Parliament. He would sit in a corner and wait for Julie, or silly Tony to give him the ok to open his mouth. In reference to your stupid statement about catherine King, you obviously don't read the newspaper, or Watch Tv, to see all of the Funding of projects she has got in her Electorate. For an example to Cancer Unit for Ballarat. Yes jobs were lost but that was due to the EGC, overseas. Our Country came out of it better than every other nation.

This baffles me. Why would you run for government if you don't want to talk to the people. Very confused. Am I missing something or have the liberals abandoned Ballarat????

Mark Banwell doesn't seem to want the job. The real test for Catherine King will be to see how she goes as a member of the opposition. During my couple of years reading her comments in The Courier she seems to be the normal back bench Party Parrot. As does Geoff Howard!

How can the people of Ballarat trust Banwell to stand up for us in Canberra if he won't even speak to the community. I have voted liberal but because of Banwell's pathetic campaign I will now switch votes to labor.

How about people let him be... maybe there was a very logical reason as to why he did not mingle. Mark Banwell is an upstanding fine person and given some leeway I am sure he will grow into being an outstanding candidate for Ballarat. I am sure Catherine King had her fumbles in her early days and they were certainly not reported in the paper. Mark Banwell has been a respected business and restraunter in the Ballarat community. How about for once instead of doing the usual knocker Aussie thing and show some leniancy, use the media to it's best advantage, with constructive positive feedback. Instead of slamming negative public criticism that does little good for anyone but sell newspapers. And for all the above metioned side chair critics, how about the old addage: walk a mile in some one else's shoes before throwing stones.

What sort of candidate won't speak to the media Either he has nothing to say or he has been gagged. If his liberal masters control him so much he can't be relied on to deliver anything for Ballarat.

The Libs mustn't care about Ballarat very much! What a hopeless candidate! @Barry, if you're worried about debt you might want to take a look at each party's spending promises during the election campaign. The Libs are promising in excess of $12bn spending whilst the ALP will only spend $3bn. Its pretty clear who is really worried about debt and who is trying to buy an election!
