Ballarat police march over shortages

16 Mar, 2010 01:15 PM
AN estimated 50 police today marched to the office of Ballarat MLA Geoff Howard to highlight what they say is severe under resourcing at the local station.

Following a union meeting in the station earlier in the morning, the group walked three blocks to Mr Howard's office, where Police Association secretary Sen Sgt Greg Davies and local union delegates met with Mr Howard.

Sen Sgt Davies said Mr Howard assured the group it was his view Ballarat could use more police and had undertaken to address the issue with Premier John Brumby and Police and Emergency Services Minister Bob Cameron.

''This is a very large contingent of police and some family members, many of them on their days off, where they would far rather be at home with their families,'' he said.

''It's a very unusual step, those members who are on duty have taken their lunch break to come and do this.''

What’s Greg Davies up to – is he really working for the police union (sorry Police Association) or himself. According to last week’s Courier the Police in Ballarat are fully staffed and it is the Chief Commissioner who decides where police are located not the local Member of Parliament. Can you imagine the cries of outrage if local members decided operational activities. And why protest outside Ballarat East electoral office is it because Greg is planning on running against Geoff Howard for the Liberals.

Will Peter Ryan explain where the extra Police will work from (new station?) and what will they be doing (more speed cameras to pay for the new station?). Last time he was in Government we saw police numbers slashed and stations closed.

What difference a day makes - "I don't accept they are significantly under resourced, they have more resourcing than they have ever had," said Mr Howard yesterday and yet today "Mr Howard assured the group it was his view Ballarat could use more police". QED they must be under resourced? Between Howard and Overland today it's a wonder they havnt strated the earth spinning backwards they are back peddling so fast.

These guys and girls should have taken over the stockade. Now that would have made world news, a 2nd eureka revolution but this time the troopers and not the miners.

Understaffing & morale must be really bad at Ballarat Police Station for them to believe they needed to make this stand. Bravo boys in blue. Two thumbs down to LaLa Land resident Geoff Howard & Brumby

BALLARAT East MLA Geoff Howard yesterday reaffirmed his claim Ballarat police were better resourced than ever before. "I don't accept they are significantly under resourced, they have more resourcing than they have ever had," he said. It's amazing what a large contingent of police men knocking at your door can do to your memory Geoff.
