Ballarat records coldest day in a decade

30 Jun, 2010 04:57 PM
JUST when residents thought Ballarat's coldest day for the year had come and gone, yesterday happened.

The maximum reached was 5.5 degrees, the lowest maximum recorded for Ballarat in 10 years.

The previous lowest was a maximum of 5 degrees recorded on May 27, 2000.

It wasn't until 4pm yesterday that the temperature reached 5 degrees before gradually increasing throughout the evening.

Overnight the temperature got down to 1 degree but the windchill temperature was as low as minus 4.8 degrees.

On Monday Ballarat recorded a high of 7.7 degrees after an overnight low of minus 2.1 degrees.

Even though yesterday's minimum didn't go as low as Monday's, Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Peter Newham said it was still considered Ballarat's coldest day.

"I guess it's how you look at it," Mr Newham said.

"It sounds funny to say `lowest maximum' but that's what it was - the lowest maximum temperature in 10 years."

According to the BOM, the lowest maximum ever recorded in Ballarat was 3.2 degrees in May of 1977.

The lowest minimum ever recorded was minus 6 degrees in July 1982.

The rest of the state also experienced cold weather, with Melbourne residents shivering through their coldest day in two years.

Today we are expecting a minimum of 2 degrees and a maximum of 8 degrees with rain and a chance of sunshine.

Its amazing how many people were mocking global warming yesterday! Had to do some shopping and everywhere i went people were asking where had it gone? I really wonder if it ever existed..

seriously mick. do some research. climate change has very little to do with day to day weather patterns, and yet - every time it rains, the sceptics come out of the woodwork.

I can't understand why Ballarats published temperature is taken from the Airport where it is considerably colder with stronger wind, this does not accurately reflect the weather conditions of Ballarat as a whole. Considering it was 8 degrees in town at 10.30am and still 5 degrees at 10pm, the claim of a maximum of 5.5 degrees throughout the day is ludicrous.

'Amazed', this has been answered many times before by the BOM on ABC radio: infrastructure costs and security. End of story. We all know that the temp on top of Ballarat Real Estate premises in Sturt St reads differently to the officially recorded one, and that weather events from one side of Ballarat differ (sometimes vastly) from events experienced on the other side.

CLimate change over and the spin doctors are looking for a new scare campaign

The temperature did not get anywhere near 8 amazed. It was more like 2 until 11am. As for global warming id have to agree with the sentiments above, not hearing many people thinking its real.
