Ballarat records strong retail growth

02 Sep, 2010 12:29 AM
BALLARAT has experienced strong growth in the retail sector, according to new statistics.

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics this week showed a 6.5 per cent growth in retail trade over the past year for Victoria's retail sector.

This growth was ahead of the national result of 4 per cent.

It included a 19.3 per cent growth in Victoria's cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services.

Commerce Ballarat chairman Simon Coghlan said the ABS statistics reflected Ballarat's economy.

''It's reflective of strong improvement in the retail sector and Ballarat is no exception.

''This time of year can often be challenging, but figures show consumer confidence is returning and we're seeing positive results. In terms of the local economy, things are strong in Ballarat and it's looking good for the future''.

Mr Coghlan said that despite job losses in the Ballarat manufacturing sector, increases in consumer confidence in the region would help employment levels.

''When people are prepared to spend disposable income on areas including hospitality, it's a good sign for Ballarat's economy.''

Are you sure it's us that's doing the spending Simon. Lots of job losses and we as a town are spending more the maths don't add up. How about a good above average period for torists visting Ballarat and doing most of the spending I think at the moment we have them to thank keeping small buisiness a float.

''When people are prepared to spend disposable income on areas including hospitality, it's a good sign for Ballarat's economy.'' - People are not spending disposable income, they are spending on credit cards! At least lets hope so because if people have disposable income sure as anything the interest rates will go up to control this inflation.
