Ballarat records wettest August in 101 years

01 Sep, 2010 09:33 AM
THEY say you don’t know a real winter until you’ve experienced one in Ballarat and this year the saying rang true.

Ballarat has shivered through its coldest winter in 16 years and wettest winter in 14 years, with 260mm

dumped on the city.

A whopping 161mm of rain fell last month alone, making it Ballarat’s wettest August in 101 years.

There were also a few flurries of snow around town.

WeatherZone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said Ballarat had experienced a ‘‘real winter’’.

‘‘August’s daytime temperature average was only 10 degrees, 1.5 degrees below the long-term average,’’ he said.

Night temperatures hovered around 2.9 degrees.

And while today is the first day of spring, the city has been warned not to shed the woollie socks just yet.

‘‘(The warm weather) will be a little while coming,’’ Mr Dutschke said.

‘‘There’s a bit of rain at the moment. We’re looking at between 5mm and 15mm for the region. This weekend

you can expect 20mm to 40mm of rain and a burst of strong winds.’’

Mr Dutschke said the weather would not start to warm up until midspring.

‘‘We could even see some extremely hot days before the end of spring, with the potential for high fire danger days,’’ he said.

Ballarat can also expect reasonably frequent rain.

‘‘It will be a real mixed bag, with good bouts of rain, warm

days and a couple of coldies thrown in too,’’ Mr Dutschke said.

It's amazing to see the amount of rain we are getting at the moment but I'm a bit over it. Not to worry, the Lakes looking great, the dams in the region are full as they can be and there'll be plenty of feed around for the animals to gorge themselves on come Spring. I just hope the little Swans in Lake Wendouree did OK out of the rapid rise of the last few weeks.

Where's prof. Diesendorf and BREEZE on this unusal global warming that has seen the rivers and lakes fill????? The gig is up the silent majority are more concerned about the cost of living pressure's than spin

Could we please have Penny Wong, Tim Holding, Peter Garrett and Bob Brown standing in tullaroop, or cairn curran, or hepburn's lagoon talking about climate change and how these lakes will never fill again!

O.K., too the climate control people who said everything is drying up because of this and that, please explain to this idiot why the hell we have just had the wettest August in over 100 years. lol. Yeah, thought so, because you have no idea and hopefully you will understand the Earths cycle. Now to C.H. Water, are you getting all of this water or just watching it head South through sheer ignorance, again?

Climate by definition changes, it is not a constant element. One wet winter doesn't provide man has no influence on our weather patterns. However the man made warming alarmists (such as BREEZE) have no trouble whatsoever blaming any old heat wave or bushfire on man made global warming. These groups rely on Government money and the likes of Al Gore are making millions with their campaign of fear. At the end of the day most people care about the planet and as climate science is so complex, many people simply take on board these scares as fact and don't question it. The alarmists may in fact be proven right but I guarantee none of them are 100% certain in what they say. I urge you all to Google 'climategate' to see how some climate scientists have tried to make things appear worse than they really are.

I've been on my soapbox on this issue once already (global warming cf, climate change - 26 August) and I won't go there again. But think - which parts of the world get the heaviest rain? The tropics. What do we know about the air temperature there? Warmer air might mean more evaporation and less rain in some areas, but there will still be the same amount of rain, distributed differently. By all means be sceptical about climate change, but please don't rule it out as a possibility for our grandchildren's, and their grandchildren's, sake

We were told not long ago that it wasnt going to snow anymore to, we had brumby and cohorts spending up on taxpayers money to "promote" warming and no snow, and look whats happened! Taxpayers money should not be used on baseless predictions that are useless. This cool wet climate is not consistant with warming of any kind, in fact it is the opposite. Im sick of having this rubbish pushed on us by the likes of BREAZE and the labor government, time for some clear thinking from those who really know the climate.

Climate change is also about the SEVERITY of weather events, chaps. Read a bit further into the info available...
