Ballarat region primary schools on alert after incidents

30 Jul, 2010 02:25 AM
POLICE presence around Ballarat district primary schools has been stepped up after two separate incidents involving school children in recent days.

All primary schools in the district have been put on alert by the Department of Education and the Catholic Education Office following the two incidents, one an attempted abduction.

Ballarat police investigating the incidents at Creswick and Black Hill primary schools believe the two offences were unrelated.

Police service area manager in Ballarat, Inspector Bruce Thomas said police activity around all schools had increased this week following the incidents.

In the first incident, on July 20, two Creswick Primary School pupils were approached by a man offering Mintie lollies. The incident took place at 3.20pm, when the pupils were still in the school yard.

Inspector Thomas said the girls declined the man's offer twice before the school bell rang and they ran into the school building.

He said the man was described as Caucasian, aged in his mid-30s, 180cm tall, with black hair and a black moustache. He wore small, dark sunglasses. It is believed he was driving a small, silver-coloured car.

In the second incident, a Black Hill Primary School Grade 6 pupil was walking to school along Nicholson St at about 8.50am Tuesday when she was approached by a man who offered her a lift.

Inspector Thomas said after the pupil declined the man's offer he drove off.

The man was in his 30s, with long brown hair to his jaw line. He wore a black baseball hat and a green high-visibility jumper. He drove a white sedan with pink and blue lightning bolts on the side of the car, near the front wheel.

Inspector Thomas has asked teachers and parents to keep an eye on pupils and to report suspicious activities around schools.

The Department of Education and Catholic Education Office have issued warnings to their respective Ballarat schools.

A spokeswoman from the Department of Education said each of the 21 schools in the Highlands City Network were alerted to the incidents.

The department has offered counselling to the Black Hill and Creswick primary school pupils involved in the incidents. Other schools in the district have also been offered a counselling service for those pupils concerned by the

cases.

Anyone with information about either incident can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Oh so now a public message is sent out about these incidents. What about the incident earlier this year i reported to the Vice Principal of my daughter's school about a guy lapping the school in a white vehicle waving to my daughter and her friend? They didn't know the guy and when i reported it i was told it was no big deal he probably waving to someone he knew. To my knowledge noone waved back to him and this incident seemed to have been blown off as me being paranoid. Would i have been called paranoid if my daughter or her friend had been assaulted or kidnapped? I doubt it. Nice to know my concerns were taken seriously when this first happened isn't it?

Thats what happens when our town is used for a dumping ground for released criminals. Ballarat will end up as the state rubbish tip were released out of jail criminals and fresh boat people will be dumped.

I was wondering if these reports are connected to the reports of a man in a white car seen near Gordon Primary School & Bacchus Marsh Primary School, which I heard about yesterday. So my child has been warned to be on the lookout today as he maybe doing the rounds!

I'm just glad you wrote this article as we havent been told by the schools which in my opinion we should be, at least we can be even more vigilant now. More needs to be said about this!

MARK - Your comments always amaze me. I do get a laugh though. But seriously, where do you get your information? Fresh boat people? Are you talking about the "non-white" community? Racism is strong in this one!

I can't believe you are using "boat people" in relation to some weirdo trying to lure children. There are crazies everywhere, not just Ballarat. We as parents just need to be very vigilant and make our children aware of "stranger danger." I know I will be on the lookout for anything suspicious.

I'm sorry MARK, normally I deal with your ridiculous comments by simply ignoring them but I have to call you out on this one. Your comment is just absolute rubbish. Released criminals have to go somewhere. If they have done their time and have been deemed suitable for release, then why should you have a problem with them? As for your comments on 'boat people', I don't think anything I could say would sway your conservative ignorance. I can tell who you'll be voting for in a couple of weeks.

'Boat people' MARK? Did you read the article? "...man was described as Caucasian"! Or did you mean the boat people from England?

Themis I will tell you who it will be Liberal even though I have thought about a strong independent but I will give Liberal one last chance since they have promised to take criminals out and to also blow other countries scum out of the water meaning rat bag boat people. Brad do know of any white boat people we don't behave that way.

Isn't the issue here about children's safety and the creeps lurking around watching them? Not racism or boatpeople.
