Ballarat tourism head Sossi to visit India, China

02 Feb, 2012 06:15 PM
BALLARAT Regional Tourism director George Sossi’s feet will hardly touch the ground this year.

Mr Sossi will visit India this month, China in May and September, and Perth in June as part of state and federal trade missions.

The trips will be paid for by the Great Southern Touring Route, a cross regional marketing partnership jointly promoting a touring route connecting Geelong, Warrnambool, Ballarat and the Grampians.

However, Ballarat City Council’s membership to the organisation costs $37,500 annually.

Mr Sossi said the partnership had been the foundation of Ballarat’s international tourism activity for the past 20 years.

“Due to the cost and complexities of the wholesale international tourism market, Ballarat, as a destination is only marketed internationally through its membership of the Great Southern Touring Route,” Mr Sossi said. He said the number of international overnight visitors to Ballarat for the year ending September 2011 was 21,100, up 26.4 per cent on 2010/11.

International day trip visitors also rose 4.8 per cent to 144,000.

“The importance of the China market to Ballarat is also significant in that it is by far the largest international market for Ballarat and Sovereign Hill.”

You only have to sit on Sturt st and watch the numbers of tourists walking around taking photos and taking in the sights. We forget how beautiful our old buildings are, especially to overseas visitors.

The rates that businesses that benefit from tourism would more than cover the councils membership. Money much better spent than $80000 on "visioning" for Vic park.

More waste of ratepayer's money. Nice "work" if you can get it. JUNKET!

Spend the money on Ballarat and 'They will come'.

to Ratepayer - in today's world unfortunately "build it and they wil come" no longer works as far as visitors are concerned .... it's a very aggressive world out there and if ballarat isn;t pushing the city at these meetings overseas, then another region will gladly take its place .... you think all the visitors just come to ballarat by chance? No, they have to be told - it's called marketing .... ever heard of it?

@matt; Your comment is only a small component of why People come to Ballarat, Ratepayer is also correct, doesn't matter what you tell people, if there's nothing new or special about Ballarat they won't come! Mr Sossi would better of promoting the advantages of coming to Ballarat to Tour Companies in Australia that's what they do.

The $37,500 to be a member, and the Great Southern Touring Route, is paying, interesting play on words. So the ratepayers are actually paying.

The wonderful heritage that is evident from a stroll down Sturt Street and along Lydiard Street is something unique to Ballaarat and will continue to attract visitors as long as we promote our city and preserve its character. Send George Sossi to Korea as well.

Hear, Hear Matt.

clackervalve, glen and I.M.H.O clearly have little to no knowledge of marketing or tourism.

Armchair experts!

Based on personal experience, perhaps Council are investigating outsourcing administration to those countries?
