Ballarat traders slam parking price rise

30 Jul, 2010 10:29 AM
BALLARAT traders say they will suffer from a hike in car parking rates in the city.

But the Ballarat City Council has defended the price rises, the first of their kind in several years.

Parking fees in the city have increased from $1 an hour to $1.20 an hour.

The all-day parking rate has gone up from $3 to $4.

Some meters have already been changed over, with the rest to be adjusted during the 2010-11 financial year.

The increase was flagged in the council's budget, which was passed in June.

Alan Roberts, owner of Sturt Street's The Stag Salon said the increase was ''ludicrous''.

''Who else can get away with a 20 per cent increase?'' Mr Roberts said yesterday.

Cold Rock Ballarat owner Robyn Harmer said the increase was another imposition on small traders in central Ballarat.

''I think the council has done enough other stuff to put people off coming in to the city. Parking is the nail in the coffin,'' Ms Harmer said.

Other traders said customers carried one and two dollar coins but many did not have the extra 20c for the meter.

Ballarat City Council acting chief executive officer Jeff Pulford said there had not been a rise in the hourly rate since 2007.

''We think a 20c increase in three years is reasonable and we've attempted to minimise the impact of that by not allowing it to be greater at this stage,'' Mr Pulford said.

He said the city's parking rates still compared favourably with those in Geelong and Bendigo.

''We think it's a moderate increase, but of course we're aware that for our community any parking fee rise is an issue.''

The council did not get any objections to the price rise when the draft budget was advertised in May.

Commerce Ballarat executive officer Jodie Gillett said a small increase was reasonable given there hadn't been one for three years.

But she said the council needed to ensure parking was kept as affordable as possible so there was no negative impact on business in the city.

''Parking in Ballarat, compared to other areas, is still quite affordable, but we need to keep it that way,'' Ms Gillett said.

Why is 20c an hour rise in parking fees such a leading news story, Ballarat must be a very dull place if that is all we have to report on! Plus for those who work in town and are going to be charged an extra $5 per week they also shouldn't complain, bet their wages or tax savings have gone up by twice that amount since the parking fee was last raised.... Really what a to do about nothing.

This is rubbish. Not only have they increased the price, but they've also recently converted a number of All Day parks in Dawson St to 1HR parks... meanwhile the majority of the 4HR parks in Sturt St outside St Pats Church remain empty every day. If you want to improve parking options in the CBD then put on a FREE city loop bus that does a round trip up and down Sturt St every 15 minutes or so. Then it wouldn't matter where people parked....

Parking in Ballarat city centre is becoming more and more difficult with each passing month! For example, attempting to find parking within a few blocks of the Regent Cinema is a nightmare. Very few parking spots are available that are more than two hours within the cinema precinct. With an elderly parent who loves coming to the movies with me, the long walk from 2hr+ parking is difficult for her. The city centre has become so congested with parking traffic and there is a desperate need for more parking spaces - not a rise in parking fees.

Just another example of how the council are doing nothing for small local traders, many of whom got the nottice of increased rates this week and now a likley reduction in passing trade... Thanks BCC you realy are helping the economic recovery with these money grabs.

Another reason to abolish local councils. They waste more money than any other form of government and are just down right greedy.

A hairdresser worried about a client having to pay another 20 or 40 cents while getting a $100 hairdo! If it's that big a worry promote the business by paying the extra.

The Ballarat traders show a level of myopia that would make my gold fish look like an academic. All we here from council is how they (read: the traders vested interests) want a 'big' Ballarat, where new development will shower them with untold riches as 'shoppers' will swarm to the new shiney Ballaratmetropolis. However, when the other side of the coin is raised, i.e. congestion, higher rates, higher service charges, higher parking fees, etc, etc, they start crying foul! Well people be careful for what you wish for.

If you don't want to be extorted ,there are ways around it.Personally, I believe it's best just to follow the Melbourne example. We should all ride Harleys and litter the footpaths with them without giving the Sheriff of nottingham a damn nicholl!!!
