SAM Ludeman believes that love can inspire you to reach great heights, as does his character in Xanadu the Musical. The former University of Ballarat Arts Academy graduate has scored the lead role of Sonny in the Melbourne production of the hit Broadway musical, which opened last night."Sonny is simple but a very, very passionate artist and his goal is to create art so wonderful that it changes the world," Ludeman said."He gets a bit lost in his own confusion and doubts himself a bit so when he meets the girl he falls in love with it inspires him to create something greater."I'm a little bit like Sonny in the sense that all I want to do is create art by acting or dancing and singing, and after recently falling in love for the first time, it really is inspiring."Xanadu follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens on a quest to inspire Sonny to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time - the first Roller Disco.Ludeman said performing the lead role did get overwhelming at times."There's a lot of nerves, especially leading up to opening night, but I'm taking it in my stride and dealing with it well. It feels quite grand," he said."I've played some great roles before and usually I play the comic character but this character has a lot of depth and I'm always on stage so I need to stay in the moment all the time and I'm finding that part of the challenge."Xanadu the Musical is showing at the so-called Grand Xanadu Marquee at Melbourne's Dockalands until April before heading to Sydney and Brisbane. For more information and tickets, visit www.xanaduthemusical.com.au.
