Ballarat water levels at eight year high

23 Sep, 2010 11:02 PM
BALLARAT'S water storage has reached its highest level for eight years.

Ballarat's reservoirs are almost 70 per cent full, a figure that has not been reached since 2002.

And that figure is expected to keep rising.

Central Highlands Water spokeswoman Shelley Best said there was still good flow into the catchments after recent rains, and Ballarat's immediate future was secured.

Under stage 1 water restrictions, it is estimated that Ballarat has enough water to last at least five years.

"Water resources for Ballarat and district have continued to improve, with storages now holding more than 5.2 years of supply under the current stage 1 restriction levels," she said.

"Into the future this means that the Goldfields Superpipe has secured supplies for the region well beyond 2030."

Catchments were 69.2 per cent full on Tuesday, a substantial rise from the 64.7 per cent reading taken on the previous Tuesday.

Storages were as low as seven per cent in 2007.

Although less than 5mm of rain has fallen in the past week, Ms Best said there is still steady water flowing from previous downpours.

"There are still good inflows into our reservoirs from the recent rainfall," she said.

On January 1 this year, Ballarat was on stage 3 restrictions before they were eased to stage 1 on August 1.

Ballarat had spent the previous three years under stage 4 and stage 4e restrictions.

How fantastic to see so much water around the place. It wasn't so long ago that my neighbour Mal had sand blowing into his swimming pool

what CHW up the water charges to make up the huge loses they'll incur when water values drop dramatically

If local council had any forethough whatsoever, when the drought was on, instead of increasing water rates for people, why didnt they start planning for the future by ensuring that proper run of into water reserves were maintaned and established?? I mean we have The Yarrowee Creek that recently busted it's banks, now why cant we have a major water reserve supply that it fills regularly? I Mean Barwon water servces cathes that water, treats it and uses it. We, Ballarat people and Council allow it to run away to another place that utilizes and uses it. But once again, This ballarat Council of ours allows such in-justices to continue, or perhaps the word "Stupidity to happen", again and again! One wonders if they really care about anything rather than putting rates up and spending money, OUR money on worthless idea's that don't even have anything to do with Water supply, or anything else that really matters when times are tough. Another Mall with struggling retailers isn't going to bring what we need Ballarat City Council. You need real leaders that looks out for the well-being of the community, not your your own names sake. Very annjoyed resident here, many more like me.

An 8 year high hey? Gee, Just as every dam and catchment in the district is close to or overflowing and paddocks are under water. All being so with NO THANKS to any politically based, exhorbitant costing, unneccesary, admission of 'do nothing FAILURE', Stupidpipe. What a joke. Nice to see an 'aerial' shot of the White Swan seeing as public access has been banned now for the last few years in a cynical and deceitful ploy to manipulate and condition public behaviour/opinion by CHW and Labor. Are we going to start talking %'s again or continue with the obstructive deceit of meaningless volumes still? Here's a tip. Cosgrove's dam has 680ml ergo, it's FULL 100+% Newlyn has 3125ml ergo, it's FULL 100+% - and no thanks to any Stupidpipes. Ballarat ( and indeed the whole State's) water users have been duped and manipulated by Labor and their useless 'no new dam' water authorities beholden to Green preferences. Lazy 'do nothing' Geoff Howard has sat back and allowed the LIES, nay, propagated the LIES all this time.

Can't wait for my water charges to go through the ceiling as CHW try to fix the black hole in the budget with water values and requirements falling dramatically

er, 'and so what'...it's people like you who have no clue of accountability or direction of responsibility by blaming the local council for our water woes and failure to prepare, instead of the REAL culprits CHW and State Labor that put us in this position time and time again. Wake up and PUNISH those really responsible - LABOR at the next State election.

And if we've had so much rain and everything else is full, what about the swamp in town? I thought the storm water and all this treated water that need a % of storm water etc to run into the lake. Why isn't it 100% FULL.........
