FARMERS are rejoicing after the weekend's rainfall, with some saying it was an autumn break they had not seen in more than 25 years.
Farmers reported varied rainfall across the district, from 70mm to more than 100mm.
Tourello potato farmer David Myers said he was pleased with the rain - 74mm fell on his property until yesterday morning.
He said it would finish the irrigation on his potato crop and there would be considerable future benefits.
"It's probably the most substantial fall of rain we've had for a considerable amount of time," Mr Myers said.
"It's certainly going to lead into hopefully what will be quite a reasonable autumn, promoting grass growth, and it will set up the cropping ground for sowing later."
Across the district at Lal Lal, farmer Geoff Fisken received up to 80mm and could not be happier.
"It's fantastic, none of us have seen an autumn break like this for a long, long time. Maybe in 1984 was a true autumn break," Mr Fisken said.
He said yesterday he dug down in the paddocks he intends to sow for pasture, and the moisture had gone deep into the soil, as much as 10 centimetres down.
"It's going to do a heap of good. We were getting desperate for water and it's taken the pressure off ...hopefully we'll get a bit more rain in a week or so," Mr Fisken said.
"If there is a downside, we won't be shearing tomorrow - but I would rather the rain than a day's shearing."
Ullina farmer David Anderson recorded 105mm at his property.
"I can't remember the last time we've had an autumn break this early," he said.
"For anyone who has kept their stock numbers up, you couldn't order better, it's just magnificent."
Mr Anderson said the weather had created perfect conditions for weeds and he would monitor them over the coming weeks.
