Ballarat's Christmas tree fire deliberately lit

22 Dec, 2009 09:08 AM
BALLARAT Mayor Judy Verlin yesterday branded the arsonist who destroyed the the city's $60,000 Christmas tree, located near the Bridge Mall, late on Sunday a "stupid individual".

The glittering eight-metre centrepiece of Sturt St's festive decorations was dismantled yesterday after flames engulfed it about 10.45pm on Sunday, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the night sky.

Police have ruled out an electrical fault as the cause and are hunting for a male who was seen acting suspiciously at the base of the tree just moments before it caught fire.

"This is an act of vandalism against the community," Cr Verlin said. "This is a community investment and it's disappointing when one or two stupid individuals spoil the fun for everyone else," Cr Verlin said.

"This impacts the whole community because it is ratepayers' money being used for a community asset, so ratepayers have every right to be disappointed."

Cr Verlin said council would meet police to discuss how to prevent similar acts of vandalism in the future.

"As a community we need to send a very clear message this behaviour is totally unacceptable. I have had discussions with police this morning and we will be continuing to meet with police looking at new initiatives to combat this type of behaviour," she said.

"Council has made significant investment in CCTV cameras in the city area, so if people do the wrong thing they are going to be caught and will be responsible for their actions."

The act of vandalism came just three weeks after The Courier reported council had been forced to hire security guards to prevent similar late-night damage to its decorative reindeer display in front of the Town Hall.

Ballarat police criminal investigations unit Detective Senior Constable Garth Morris described the act as "random, inexplicable, anti-social behaviour" and said the likely source of the blaze was a cigarette lighter or match.

He said the highly flammable plastic material the tree was made of made no accelerant necessary.

Det Sen Const Morris said security guards at a nearby nightclub called police after spotting a male behaving suspiciously at the base of the tree before it caught fire.

Anyone with information is asked to phone Ballarat CIU on 5820 6080 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

How did this thing cost $60,000?

So the council wasted $60,000 on a fake plastic extremely flammable tree. How is that good for the environment and town? If it's that bad one little spark could have set it off... and why do we need giant trees and reindeer in town anyway?

What a low act of stupidity. I just don't know when people will start to show respect for the city they live in. The council has done very well to spread the Christmas cheer this year and these mindless idiots could not care less.

Moron! Hopefully those CCTV cameras will do their job and identify this idiot and discipline him with the full extent of the law. It's Christmas, no need to spoil it for those who enjoy this time of year.

How about doing something about it then, Judy?

We have the right to be disappointed, but did not have the right to decide if $60,000 should be spent on a Christmas tree? What a waste of money. Not just because it's been destroyed by yet another Ballarat thug, but because many people find pagan icons have diminished the true ideal of Christmas.

Well mayor you called the criminal a stupid individual AND? What plans do have to fix our revolting, feral super high crime rate? $60,000 damage should be worth having a lunch with the judges in this town and telling them in no uncertain terms that enough is enough and to start dishing out jail.

Jeff, the point is to put some Christmas spirit into our town. If you don't see the point of it, I'm sure children do. I agree with MARK, judges are clearly too lenient. If this feral is caught I would hope the judge give him the maximum penalty they can land on him. The constant crime, vandalism, assualt in this town is absoutely ridiculous. If it is not handled now in the future it will only be much worse. My children will grow up in an environment that is unsafe. And I for one don't want to be an old lady who gets beaten up while out for a walk.

Two issues here. $60,000 is a lot of kanga but then again it's Christmas so I won't be a Grinch. The second issue is that the feral who did this has little to fear. Regarding the Aldredton vandalism reported yesterday, I wrote in this forum that similar stuff happened in my street. As a group of fathers we settled the thing ourselves. Maybe there needs to be more community surveillance of anti-social behaviour. I notice that some readers knock the cops for a whole bunch of reasons but it's not their fault. There are insufficient penalties when these morons break the law because the social do-gooders and left wing civil libertarians have watered things down so much, the law breakers are no longer scared. Look at yesterday, the guy that killed his three kids when he drove them into a dam is out of prison. The Herald Sun is unable to print pictures of two murderers who beat a young Sudanese boy to death with poles, because of "possible community retribution". A drunk driver doing burnouts runs into a front yard where a little boy is playing and killed him. It looks like the driver is going to be home for Christmas. Control has been lost and maybe as a community we need to strike back.
