Ballarat's Christmas tree replaced in Sturt St

Ballarat's Christmas tree replaced in Sturt St

23 Dec, 2009 10:33 AM
YOU can’t keep a good tree down, or so it would seem.

After a deliberately lit fire damaged Sturt St’s Christmas tree on Sunday night, a replacement has been

put in place.

Yesterday, the Ballarat City Council removed the damaged tree and replaced it with a slightly shorter

one, which had been on display in the Town Hall.

Ballarat Mayor Judy Verlin said the new tree would send a

message to the community.

‘‘Ballarat’s Christmas spirit cannot be dampened.’’

An unknown arsonist set the eight-metre tree alight, causing an estimated $22,000 worth of damage to the

$60,000 tree.

A council spokeswoman said the frame of the tree was mostly not damaged in the fire and the tree would

be able to be replaced.

Police are hunting for a male who was seen acting

suspiciously at the base of the tree moments before it caught fire.

After reading so many bad stories of late on this website it's fantastic to read a good news story. I am looking forward to seeing the tree tomorrow night before singing carols. I wish all of The Courier readers a Merry Christmas and am looking forward to sharing the readers my views on news/sports in 2010.

Why people damage trees is beyond me - think of the environment before doing such acts.

Well it's so good to see the staff in the town hall shout themself to a Christmas tree. Is there any more around? Maybe this one should be placed on a scaffold stand, fenced in off the ground, so we don't have the same thing happen again.

My beautiful partner Kerryn and I would like to wish everyone a safe and very merry Christmas! Wonderful to see the Chirstmas spirit alive and well in our great city. This story reminds me of a time when I missed a flight home from Serbia for Christmas only to have a good samaritan give me his ticket so I could make it home in time to celebrate with my family. Amazing how wonderfully generous some people can be and what Christmas means to so many. Jose, if you are out there, Merry Christmas mate. Thanks again.

And is this one made of less flammable material or is it a fireball waiting to happen as well? As for wasting yet more money on pointless decorations sigh... why? Yay Christmas if you are into that thing. What about those who aren't or follow other religions? Do they get the city dolled up for them? No, of course not.

I wonder if council will ever win. It's either wasting money on decorations or getting abused for not putting them out at all or not enough.

Jeff. The reason why the city gets dolled up for Christmas is because this country was founded on Christian beliefs. If you're offended by people decorating public areas according to the beliefs that this country was founded on, feel free to leave.

This stuff only happens in Ballarat because Ballarat is backwards.

Good onya Jeff. You will be the one working on Christmas day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday because you don't care. While you're at it you might as well work on ANZAC Day as you do not seem to think this great country of ours is worth fighting for. It may scare you to know that Jewish people, Muslim people and other religious people are quite happy letting us folk have Christmas. Look around during the year and you will find that some religion or other will be having some kind of festival. What about the Chinese New Year? It is different to the Western New Year. By the way I am not religious and I have a great time at Christmas.
