A BROWN Hill man was picked up by police four times at the weekend for driving offences that included two high-speed pursuits and a collision with a city landmark.
Three of the incidents occurred in a five-hour period on Saturday morning.
Ballarat police Constable Mark Howard said the 33-year-old man was pulled over by police just after midnight on Saturday in Dana Street south.
“He was taken back to Ballarat police station where a blood alcohol reading of .099 was recorded,” Constable Howard said.
After the man was released, police alleged that he returned to his car, parked in Dana Street, and drove away.
Constable Howard said the man was involved in a single- car crash when his vehicle hit the Arch of Victory in Sturt Street about 1am.
The driver, the only occupant of the car, was taken by ambulance to Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital with minor injuries.
The man was interviewed at the hospital. Police alleged the man had been driving at speeds of between 160km/h and 170km/h along Sturt Street before hitting the Arch of Victory.
The impact caused a piece of concrete to fall away at the the base of the heritage listed structure, which is about to undergo restoration work.
After being discharged from hospital it is alleged the man was later involved in a pursuit along the Western Highway at Warrenheip.
Constable Howard said the man was driving an unregistered vehicle when the pursuit took place at 4.30am.
He was intercepted by police at a service station on the Western Highway.
Last night the man was again involved in a high speed pursuit with police in Brown Hill and Warrenheip.
Senior Constable Kirsty Robinson said the chase went for four minutes after it began in Canterbury Street, Brown Hill.
The pursuit continued into Thompson Street before the man crossed Water Street and entered Old Melbourne Road.
After travelling east along the Western Highway police allege he turned into the Lindburg Motel where he was arrested.
The man was expected to be charged with multiple driving offences last night.
