Ballarat's Eureka precinct upgrade gains momentum

Ballarat's Eureka precinct upgrade gains momentum

07 Feb, 2012 08:32 AM
BALLARAT’S $80 million Eureka precinct upgrade is gaining high-level momentum.

Potential stakeholders — including sporting and community groups — can today express interest in being part of the precinct at a planning meeting.

North Melbourne Football Club yesterday reinforced its long-term commitment to the redevelopment and its desire to be playing AFL home and away matches in Ballarat by 2020.

North Melbourne chief executive officer Eugene Arocca and head coach Brad Scott said the AFL was right behind having the Kangaroos playing in Ballarat.

They said if Ballarat had the facilities, North Melbourne would be playing in the city now.

Talks held last week between Ballarat City Council and Cricket Victoria are also believed to revolve around the stadium hosting first-class cricket games and possibly housing a new state cricket centre after the proposed Shane Warne Centre of Excellence at the Junction Oval was axed in 2010.

Eureka Stadium is also tipped to have a substantial sports medicine focus, with several other major sports expressing interest in moving to the Creswick Road precinct, which could cater for up to 10,000 fans once upgraded.

Both the state government and Cricket Victoria have confirmed preliminary talks about the stadium’s future have been held.

And Ballarat mayor Mark Harris said today’s meeting was aimed at gauging which groups wanted to be involved.

“It really needs to be a consortium,” Cr Harris said.

“We’re just putting it all together at the moment.

“It’s a bit like the concept of ‘build it and they will come’.”

He said a council delegation travelled to North Melbourne’s complex last week, which Cr Harris said had a big community focus.

“It’s a very successful model.”

Mr Arocca said he would support anything that would help the Kangaroos play AFL games in Ballarat.

“I like the concept of a stadium with football and cricket and other community facilities,” Mr Arocca said.

“Every time I come to Ballarat I scratch my head as to why it hasn’t been done before.

“It will give us entry to 250,000 people — we call it the Goldfields region — and these are football mad people.

“I certainly believe there should be a boutique stadium in Ballarat.”

The previous state government announced a pre-election $30 million upgrade of Eureka Stadium.

Spend a bit of money buying back the John Valve site. This would be called value adding and turn the whole area into a sportsand entertainment complex. Shame on the short sighted view take by council in not buying the whole area and revitalising it when it originally came on the market at $2.5m., plus clean up costs.

The previous state government was also voted OUT.

I always thought the "eureka precinct" was the national heritage list area around the stockade site? Are we talking about a footy ground, nowhere near the 'eureka precinct"?

What nth dont seem to understand is that people in this area already have a team to barrack for, id suggest half the town go for geelong, why would they want to change? I certainly wouldnt.

The rest have their teams, some go for nth, but not many, so how will they fill this stadium when they play fremantle, gold coast, gws etc? and you can guarantee they wont play big drawing victorian clubs in ballarat.

North are looking for another handout, its been canberra, gold coast, hobart and now ballarat, see a pattern emerging here?

it's nice to see something may be done in Ballarat but l see how the cars park for trash on sundays. All over the place with no respect l'm 47 and wonder why it's never been done up for real car parks. Specailly when a few years ago people were warned they be booked for parking wrong. What's the area zoned for sport's or hang on there are still people working in the area not related to sport's. I suppose l'll have to put up no parking in front of my house in Norman st as that's where an odd 2.000 cars will have to park to get the 10.00 fans l guess.

Rick: Yeah I see that pattern, not one of those locations is in Victoria. North Melbourne is only 1 hour down the road, no planes to catch. Think about what this would do for the town, tourism and restaurants etc. This will be a fantastic thing if everyone stopped whinging and worry about what team they barrack for etc. Support AFL football coming to Ballarat. Who cares if its GC or GWS, they are filled with the next generation of stars, I for one will be coming to watch!

All the Eureka stuff aside - I dont see any other team spending the time at a community group such as the Soup Bus - they came willingly - lifted the spirits of those at the bus - mingled, signed autographs, served food. These young men are a credit to their club -Thanks guys - You were great!!!!

Well dont North, you gave it your best shot but its time to fave the inevitable, just merge with the Bulldogs and be done with it. Dont be dragging Ballart down with the sinking ship.

Ballarat could also be home base for a new NRL team to support the Melbourne Storm. Wouldn't that be something ?

I agree with Thinks sentiments. Rick I disagree, I have been much more interested in what Nth are doing since they've shown interest in Ballarat and would definitely attend some games in Ballarat despite following another Vic club. I agree about the missed opportunity with John Values site could have been used for parking or new show grounds. The train line runs right past how can that be used I wonder? I think of this project as part of a bigger picture for us, we've got a few big projects on the go, Ballarat Cancer Centre, CBD works, Ballarat West, all will bring different things for us...
