Ballarat's new Anglican Bishop takes his vows

A MASSIVE gathering witnessed the Right Reverend Garry John Weatherill enthroned as the 10th Bishop of Ballarat on Saturday.More than 550 parishioners packed the Cathedral Church of Christ the King to witness the enthronement, some on big screens in adjacent halls.During the ceremony, then Bishop-elect Weatherill vowed to serve the Anglican Diocese of Ballarat to the best of his ability.“I will respect, maintain and defend the rights, privileges and liberties of this cathedral church and diocese, and preside with truth, justice and charity,” he said.“All this I will do, the Lord being my helper.”After spending 11 years as Bishop in Willochra, South Australia, the 55-year-old arrived in Ballarat earlier this year.Click here to view the galleryHe is taking over from predecessor and “good friend” Michael Hough, who resigned as the Bishop of Ballarat in December last year. Bishop Hough was the subject of misconduct allegations made in late 2008 to the Episcopal Standards Commission. His seven-year tenure had polarised Ballarat parishioners. Bishop Weatherill told The Courier recently, bringing the community together would be high on his priority list.
