A MAGISTRATE has described a Delacombe man as racist, barbaric and disgusting after he pleaded guilty to repeatedly sending threatening and demeaning mobile-phone text messages to his victims.
Ballarat Magistrates Court yesterday heard Corey Collier sent racial and threatening text messages to a man who he claimed was having a relationship with his former partner.
Three weeks later, the 20-year-old sent a text message to another victim after assaulting him at a Ballarat nightspot, threatening to kill his family and the Ballarat Miners basketball team.
Magistrate Richard Pithouse blasted Collier for his behaviour and sentenced him to three months' jail suspended for 12 months.
"He is barbaric, racist and the worst person you can think of," Mr Pithouse said.
"How you treated a human being is not how you treat an animal."
Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Steve Kent told the court Collier started sending the text messages at 6.30pm on June 6 and they ended at 1.30am the next day when police arrested him for being drunk in a public
place.
Leading Sen Const Kent said Collier became involved in a scuffle with police and damaged an officer's jacket.
The court heard that at the Karova Lounge on June 27 Collier assaulted a man by placing his hands around his throat.
Leading Sen Const Kent said he later left a message on the victim's phone, saying he would kill his family and all the Ballarat Miners team. A further message said he was going to go after him.
Defence counsel Michael Cunningham told the court his client's was angry that his relationship with his partner of four-and-a-half years ended.
"Corey made the very unfortunate decision to turn to alcohol to deal with that," Mr Cunningham said.
Collier pleaded guilty to 11 charges including stalking, making threats to kill, unlawful assault, wilfully damaging property and assaulting and resisting police.
He was convicted and placed on a 12-month community based order with 100 hours of community work.
