'Barbaric racist' in kill threat

15 Sep, 2009 11:44 PM
A MAGISTRATE has described a Delacombe man as racist, barbaric and disgusting after he pleaded guilty to repeatedly sending threatening and demeaning mobile-phone text messages to his victims.

Ballarat Magistrates Court yesterday heard Corey Collier sent racial and threatening text messages to a man who he claimed was having a relationship with his former partner.

Three weeks later, the 20-year-old sent a text message to another victim after assaulting him at a Ballarat nightspot, threatening to kill his family and the Ballarat Miners basketball team.

Magistrate Richard Pithouse blasted Collier for his behaviour and sentenced him to three months' jail suspended for 12 months.

"He is barbaric, racist and the worst person you can think of," Mr Pithouse said.

"How you treated a human being is not how you treat an animal."

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Steve Kent told the court Collier started sending the text messages at 6.30pm on June 6 and they ended at 1.30am the next day when police arrested him for being drunk in a public

place.

Leading Sen Const Kent said Collier became involved in a scuffle with police and damaged an officer's jacket.

The court heard that at the Karova Lounge on June 27 Collier assaulted a man by placing his hands around his throat.

Leading Sen Const Kent said he later left a message on the victim's phone, saying he would kill his family and all the Ballarat Miners team. A further message said he was going to go after him.

Defence counsel Michael Cunningham told the court his client's was angry that his relationship with his partner of four-and-a-half years ended.

"Corey made the very unfortunate decision to turn to alcohol to deal with that," Mr Cunningham said.

Collier pleaded guilty to 11 charges including stalking, making threats to kill, unlawful assault, wilfully damaging property and assaulting and resisting police.

He was convicted and placed on a 12-month community based order with 100 hours of community work.

Don't get angry Corey. Who knows she might even have babies to her new lover! And guess what, they might grow up and become champion Miner basketballers, and they may even serve a beer to you as well!

He is not the worst person you can think of. He is a young boy from a good family with his whole life ahead of him, who made a couple of bad decisions because he was heartbroken. Who hasn't done something stupid in a similar situation?

I don't know in what world it is okay to title a story "Barbaric racist in kill threat". This story depicts this young 20-year-old boy as a violent, drunken "bogan". What hope does it give kids like this to find or continue normally with local employment, education or even sport? And what about this boy's family and friends? Do they need the extra emotional stress of a son or close friend being named under such ridiculous headlines? Ballarat is a big town with a small community where often everyone knows everyone or at least talks about everyone else's business. This article is not journalism and it does nothing but promote ill-informed gossip.

If he can't have her nobody will. There will be millions of things in life that you want but will never be able to have so get used to it. Lucky not to be in jail.

I for one. It's not okay Laura, don't pretend it is.

If only the wrong doings of the victim were published as well.

"This story depicts this young 20-year-old boy as a violent, drunken "bogan". Well Gossip Girl, what else would you call a "threat to kill". As for Laura saying "who hasn't done something stupid in a similar situation?" I must be the odd one out because I have never threatened to kill anyone "in a similar situation". Well said Mark. "If he can't have her nobody will." How many females have been attacked or murdered by males saying the exact same thing?

I know Corey and this is not something he would do. This is just some bad desicions.

As someone who knows the 'barbaric racist' in question, I find it offensive and completely ridiculous that people are judging his entire life based on a few hundred words printed in the paper. No mention has been made of the actions leading up to the incident where the person supposedly threatened was the one provoking matters, and no-one seems to care that the 'ex-partner' was still in frequent contact with the 'barbarian'. This is a 20-year-old kid we are talking about who has lost everything that ever mattered to him because he got drunk and said something he didn't mean.

In my humble opinion it's never 'okay' to threaten someone or their family. A broken heart is not an excuse Laura and honestly I don't know anyone who threatened to kill just because a relationship didn't work out. That aside what makes me sick about this story is once again we have a Magistrate who tells us this young man is "the worst person you can think of" and then letting him go off back into the community. Now either Mr Pithouse has a very limited imagination if this crime is the worst he can think of or his punishment does not fit the crime. If this young man is "the worst person you can think of" he should be kept apart from the community. If that does not need to be done then Mr Pithouse should not have stained an already damaged reputation with such a sweeping statement.
