DESPITE the harsh weather, hundreds of Ballarat residents gathered along Wendouree Parade yesterday in support of the annual Begonia Festival Parade.
Led by the the face of this year's festival, the Mad Hatter, more than 30 floats formed the parade, which had about 900 participants.
Many of the entrants reflected this year's theme of The Secret Garden, with a touch of colour and mystery.
Participants in the parade included the University of Ballarat Pipe Band, the CFA, a Chinese dragon and various cultural associations.
Ballarat Mayor Cr Judy Verlin said she was more than impressed with Ballarat's participation in the parade.
"Ballarat should be congratulated for having a commitment to come and support the festival," she said.
"It's a demonstration of how much this community loves their Begonia weekend."
Supporters sought shelter in cars and under bright umbrellas until the sky cleared and the sun came out - at least for a short time.
"You can't miss a parade," Horsham resident Sue Winfield said.
"Who cares about the weather? The rain's good.
"I love the atmosphere."
Hundreds of people cheered the parade along, their umbrellas fitting in with the colours of the parade.
"It's wonderful to see the colour and vibrancy returned to the gardens," Cr Verlin said.
"The gardens have been crying out for this weather. It's been an absolute delight."
