 Blackout chaos strikes Ballarat

Blackout chaos strikes Ballarat

31 Aug, 2010 01:05 AM
MORE than 2000 households were affected by blackouts across Ballarat last night.

Powercor spokesman Ryan Auger said a pole fire just after 7pm in Porter Street South, Bakery Hill, was the cause of the power outage.

Mr Auger said it was believed a build-up of dirt on the insulator may have caused the fire.

He said the electricity causes a slow smoulder, which can then spark and result in a power failure to that area.

Both Coles and Safeway supermarkets, the Ballarat Police Station, traffic lights along Sturt Street and 2231 households lost power between 7.07pm and about 7.20pm.

Mr Auger said a handful of people were without power for another hour while the pole was repaired.

Powercor, Country Fire Authority crews and police attended the scene of the fire.

What about MacDonald's and Battler's Tavern, not to mention Hog's Breath? They were all dark when I went through at that time, don't they deserve a mention too?

Waterwise, love the commentary, I was thinking exactly the same thing.

No anna. They don't -they're all cheesy establishments and deserve to be in the dark permanently

david. Just because it has rained heaps lately doesn't mean there wasn't a build up of dirt. If the rain has cleaned all of the dirt off the insulator, then why's my car still dirty??
