Bourbon, cannabis and valium: crash driver spared jail

8/07/2008 11:49:00 PM
A FORMER Wendouree man who crashed into two parked cars after drinking bourbon, smoking cannabis and taking Valium was yesterday spared an immediate jail sentence.

The Ballarat Magistrates Court heard Daniel Corbett, 36, was driving at a fast rate of speed in the car park at Stockland Wendouree Shopping Centre when he crashed into a parked car, causing extensive damage on May 21, 2006.

Corbett then reversed backwards and drove into another car, causing minor damage, the court heard.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Steven Kent said Corbett sped away from the scene of the accident and police later attended his Wendouree home.

Sen Const Kent said Corbett had suffered facial lacerations and was taken to hospital. He said Corbett admitted he did not hold a driver's licence and recorded a blood alcohol reading of .211.

The court heard Corbett was also caught driving while disqualified on two other occasions.

He yesterday pleaded guilty to 14 charges, including drink-driving, careless driving, failing to report an accident and failing to answer bail.

Defence lawyer Erin Ramsay said Corbett had a difficult upbringing and left home at 12 years of age.

She said Corbett's wife of 20 years was also ill with systemic lupus.

The court heard most of Corbett's prior criminal history was more than 20-years-old.

Magistrate Tom Hassard described the careless driving as "most serious" because of the very high alcohol reading combined with the cannabis.

Corbett was convicted and sentenced to five days' imprisonment already served, a five-month suspended sentence and a 12-month community based order with conditions that he take part in a program to reduce re-offending.

He was also disqualified from driving for 42 months.

Another flag flyer for Wendouree, you can put up fences, plant trees and paint houses but you can't change the people. A police station and Centrelink office at the new train station would be handy too !

David that comment could be levelled at ANY of Ballarat's suburbs. Why just pick on Wendouree? For the record I am from Wendouree, and think it's a great place to live.

I would have to agree with both comments it takes a person to see the area in which they live and say they are bad because they are in that area which doesn't help the areas reputation at all but on the other hand it takes another person to put a positive spin on the area to give it a good reputation however if you have been in the west since the '80s then you would know what I mean.
