Brumby call for Lake Wendouree briefing

16 Mar, 2010 11:33 PM
VICTORIAN Premier John Brumby has weighed into the debate over Lake Wendouree, saying yesterday he was disappointed it had not already been filled.

Mr Brumby has now asked to be briefed about the dry lake, the processes in place to refill the city icon and, in particular, information about the Fill the Lake campaign.

Speaking on Ballarat FM radio station 3BA yesterday morning, Mr Brumby said he had been briefly informed about the new campaign, but had requested more information.

"Like every person in Ballarat and Victoria, I want to see water in Lake Wendouree," the Premier said.

Last week Ballarat businessman, Natures Cargo owner Graham Wilkie, launched a public campaign to buy a water right for the 3500 megalitres needed to refill Lake Wendouree.

Mr Brumby said yesterday he had fond memories of walking the Lake Wendouree track. "When I was treasurer, every time I went to Ballarat, if I could, I would take a brisk walk around Lake Wendouree ... I got it down to 48

minutes," he said.

"(The lake) is just a beautiful part of Ballarat."

In May last year, Mr Brumby announced Ballarat City Council would receive $650,000 for a $5.2 million project to pipe recycled water from Ballarat Goldfields to the lake.

"The State Government has contributed to a recycling proposal which works off stormwater ... that's $650,000. To be honest, I'm disappointed the lake has not be filled already," he said.

Mr Brumby pointed out that with the completion of the Wimmera-Mallee pipeline, other dry lakes in north-west Victoria had been refilled.

"It has just changed these towns ... water makes such a difference.

"If there is anything we can do to help, I'll have a look at it."

Doesn't this show up the City of Ballarat for being one of the most inept councils in the state, the mayor and councillors say things and dont they like to spruke themselves up all the bloody time of how well they are doing for the ratepayers of the city, the state Government has funded and given them money to do major works to fill the lake, what have they done? they have put a boardwalk in, deepened the ends and made some minor cosmetic changes to various parts , the public and the user groups have been active in letting council know what needs to be done to restore the lake (fill the Bloody thing) but the City of Ballarat will want to have another feisability study to see what needs to be done, SIMPLE - FILL IT UP you bloody morons.

Sorry Johnny, you dont fool me, must be an election coming up if all of a sudden you care whether the lake is full or not. No doubt we will be hearing from some more dead wood (Howard & Overington) in the coming days, photo shoots & announcements & the back slapping that goes with it.

Ah Yes...and this is what it is all about isn't it. The real motivation for the Labor apologist Courier to be taking this up now. I wondered and suspected an 'angle'....and all is revealed today. So transparent and so sickeningly blatant. Brumby's govt caused the severity of our water crisis, at Ballarat and State level and did NOTHING to address overdrawing on our supplies, below average rainfall or not for a decade.....and now steps in to imply he may 'fix/help' it in an election year. Pfft. How opportune..and how insulting to the people of Ballarat. The lake has been this way for 4 odd years and he only becomes aware or 'saddened' now. Yeah right. This has been a set up, an opening created by the Labor pandering Courier to allow Labor a gratuitous issue to 'solve' in the precarious Ballarat electorate in an election year. Labor representatives both federal and state have ignored the plight of the lake and conspicuously absent from concern...their handmaiden water authority CHW contributing to it's demise, and yet now they see an opening for 'solving' or 'helping'. Where was your 'help' a decade ago? It should never have got to this point in the first place. Labor/CHW = FAIL

Dear John We know it is an election year and I like you would like to see the lake full again. However knowing that you can not do everything at once for Ballarat would you please deal with the more important police shortage first (it would get you more votes) and leave the committed volunteers to deal with the lake. Always assuming you don't have to spend your time protecting Justin Madden.

Perhaps it's the Council that hasn't taken enough initiative, along with CWH to get things happening. Other towns with their Lakes now refilled or topped up have obviously not been prepared to take the impact on tourism, businesses and aesthetics our own city has.

What's the point? Without a decent clay bottom it leaks like a bloody sieve.

"When I was treasurer, every time I went to Ballarat, if I could, I would take a brisk walk around Lake Wendouree ... I got it down to 48 minutes," he said. Um sorry? Can't you walk around the lake if there is no water in it?

In response to "Bedlam" comment 10.18 am- You cant have been reading the papers! There is no police shortage in Ballarat according to our "esteemed" local member

There would not be enough members of the Wendouree based sports clubs left to have much effect on the next election. John why don't you join one of the clubs, such as a fishing, yachting, or rowing club ? I am sure all the local Lake Wendouree based clubs are by now running out of the hard core members who make the effort to keep these institutions running. Without the income from membership fees to cover basic costs, these hard core members are an important part of the local community.
