Buninyong resident urges fight against communications towers

16 Jan, 2012 09:50 AM
THE City of Ballarat will consider planning applications for four communications towers early this year, taking the number regionally to 16.

Apart from Buninyong, where residents have vowed to fight it, communications towers are proposed for Mitchell Park, Cardigan and Learmonth.

In the Hepburn Shire, towers are proposed for Smeaton and Newlyn and in Moorabool at Gordon, Clarendon and Yendon.

A spokeperson for the Golden Plains Shire confirmed tower applications for Cape Clear, Dereel, Enfield, Haddon, Napoleons, Ross Creek and Smythes Creek.

Anti-tower campaigner at Buninyong Natalie Squire urged communities to make their own investigations and fight passionately tower applications.

“If NBN Co does not act in an honest, open and transparent manner as per the values statement on their website, this reflects directly on the government,” Ms Squire said.

“So far all I’ve seen is smoke and mirrors from NBN.

“They blindside communities by giving them this fanfare about being selected for the roll-out.

“But can you imagine what this country will look like with towers every five kilometres?

“We’re told our community values don’t matter but we will be able to download a movie in 20 minutes.

“It’s farcical.”

Meanwhile, another local politician has weighed into the issue.

Liberal Senator Michael Ronaldson has written to the City of Ballarat asking that all residents within a kilometre of the proposed Buninyong tower be provided with details of the planning permit application.

Senator Ronaldson requested the application be dealt with by the council as a whole and not a delegated committee.

What a pack of whingers this country is breeding. for goodness sakes the NBN, will be a great thing and it will create huge amounts of Employment. This is something the Liberal Government, like Ronaldson and his cronies are not interested in. How about Ronaldson, writes to Council instead and try and get the Ballarat Saleyards moved to the Township of Bunninyong. Then these people will have something to whinge about. . This is unbelievable.

Hopefully the crackpot luddite anti-NBN minority do not get their way on this. I imagine this sorts of people opposed the telegraph and railed against Galilean thought too.

So why is Buninyong getting a tower when NBN have said they would get cable? Which one is it, can anyone tell me?

Oh so 1 NBN tower every 5kms is unacceptable but a power pole every 200 metres with wires running off it in all directions is ok? Please have some perspective and be realistic. We live in rural area's with poor access to communications and the NBN will fix that. I for one will happily put up with the occasional NBN tower and I completely understand why we're getting fixed wireless and not fibre optic cables. These whiners can move to the outback if they can't accept living in the 21st century.

Sid: The internet is as important to daily life now as electricity. If you can't see that then you're blind.

I can't fathom the mentality of anti towers and wind farms. It's called advancement and I hope you read the press release today regarding towers. If you voted liberal you'd have one on every corner. The amount of radiation is less than your phone, TV even your washing machine or hairdryer.

We've turned into a nation of luddite whingers.

What will you be anti next week?
