Buses replace peak trains due to car crash

31 Jan, 2012 12:12 AM
BUSES replaced two peak train services on the Ballarat train line early yesterday as commuters lashed V/Line via social media for the delays.

Well before 7am yesterday, a car crashed at a level crossing on Fitzgerald Road at Ardeer, damaging key infrastructure and causing lengthy delays to several crucial train services.

The peak services disrupted — the 6:54am and 7.33am from Wendouree to Southern Cross Station — meant dozens of commuters heading to Melbourne arrived later than expected for the start of their working week.

Passengers on those services changed onto coaches at Rockbank and Melton.

One stranded passenger lamented being stuck at Footscray after the signal faults at Ardeer stopped her train, tweeting “ahh deer your signal faults suck”, while another mused how “catching the train to Ballarat is a bad idea”.

Another stranded commuter vented her frustration, telling the online world that her travel plans were in disarray.

“After an hour wait in the middle of nowhere, I’m on the coach,” she tweeted.

“See you in an hour.”

The hash tag #signalfailure was also created and used by a number of disgruntled passengers throughout the morning.

A V/Line spokesman told The Courier yesterday the damage caused by the car accident “didn’t take too long” to fix, with services resuming as normal later in the morning.

“(There were) delays of up to 60 minutes as we sourced buses,” he said.

Yesterday morning’s service disruptions comes after train passengers travelling from Melbourne to Ballarat on January 15 were delayed after a person was struck on the train line near Sunshine.

There was also an earlier disruption when extreme temperatures caused lengthy delays to services on the Ballarat line on January 3.

Authorities have urged anyone who comes across a traffic collision at a rail crossing site to call triple zero immediately.

With the rising cost of fares and the unreliability of train services maybe it is time we started to drive to Melbourne ,parked at one of the outer Melbourne stations and caught a metro train into town.

Are these people serious? What do they think happens when there is a serious accident on the roads? There are delays. Obviously this incident was out of V/lines hands. Get over it you whiners

What is wrong with people getting upset when a car crashes and their precious train that 'we pay so much for already' is delayed. All the money in the world can not prevent morons from crashing on train tracks. Get over your sense of entitlement and accept the fact that these things happen. If a train is delayed because they can not find a driver or there is infrastructure failures then sure, it could be prevented and direct your anger at the correct place. Some people will whine at anything.

@bypass, and when the cost of petrol keeps rising and you are delayed by a crash on the Western Freeway, who will you blame then?

I use v/line every day and I was not on any of the trains which were delayed. To those of you telling people to stop "whinging" unless you use this service to travel to and from work each day - keep your uninformed opinions to yourself. If you do not use the service regularly you cannot begin to understand the frustrations regular commuters face with continual delays, and for the record - those on the trains were not told there was an accident, just that there were signal faults.

"meant dozens of commuters heading to Melbourne arrived later than expected for the start of their working week." - Are you aware of just how many people catch these trains of a morning.

#Axesig# - You will find that the regular commuter is infact very patient. However there have been regular delays on the train recently. Nearly all are blamed on the signals as was yesterday morning. Sitting on the train yesterday morning there was no mention of car accidents. Even after 8am this information was not relayed. Hard to understand when you dont get the information.

NOT whinging just saying!

"meant dozens of commuters heading to Melbourne arrived later than expected for the start of their working week."

Are you really aware how many people catch those services every morning ??

I catch the train as well as drive into Melbourne regularly and I can unequivocally say that I have been caught up on the dreaded Western Freeway by retarded/inconsiderate driving 5 times more than I have been held up by V-Line. The number of drivers out there who facebook and text message while driving is astonishing. 8 out of 10 times V-line gets me to work on time, even early, but what do we really expect them to do when other vehicles crash on their tracks? #firstworldproblems

@over it: I did use the train for many years and have only recently moved and no longer need to. My opinion is informed and backed up with personal experience coupled with my fair share of frustration over those years.

From my years of experience VLINE offers a pretty good service that needs a little tweaking in improvement, especially with communicating with the customers when there are delays etc
