Bushfire contained at Mt Clear

A BUSHFIRE that was burning out of control at Mt Clear has been contained.

Heavy rain helped firefighters contain the fire, which burnt about 20 hectares of bushland, about 8pm.

The fire started in scrub near Tinworth Ave about 4.40pm.

Mt Clear and Mt Helen residents were placed on high alert and advised by the CFA to activate their bushfire survival plans.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Police and fire investigators will return to the scene tomorrow morning to examine the area for clues.

Incident controller Alfred Mason said the fire had been contained on public land.

About 250 personnel and seven air appliances, including water-bombing aircraft and the CFA skycrane, helped fight the fire.

Police road blocks remain in place at Whitehorse Rd and Geelong Rd, Landale Ave and Marina Dve and Tinworth Ave and Cartledge Ave.

I only wish that there was some place where more up to date information on the severity of the fire to give an indication of what exactly is going on.

Yes, I agree. I just checked the CFA website and there is nothing on it that relates to this fire, not even an early warning. I only hope residents in the area received warnings via text or phone as I understand was going to be the plan this bushfire season.

There is a 'watch and act' warning on the CFA website. It was taken down for about 10 minutes but is now back up. http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/inciden ts/warnings_advice.htm

I'm not sure about the parameters for the warning system but the Mt Clear fire is within 1km of my house and we did not get any warnings from the new system. The CFA website is the best place for information but even this is a long way behind what's actually happening for people in the area.

There are notices on the CFA website regarding this fire. Under both warnings and advice and the incident summary. This info has been up for the last half hour.

I'm in Delacombe and have seen quite a bit of movement in the last hour. Also the firefighting helicopter arrived from Melbourne around 6.10pm from what I can see.

All my addresses on bills and especially phone records are listed for Cartledge Ave and I haven't heard a thing.

I just hope and pray no lives are lost. No information is forthcoming as the CFA said that the winds were unpredictable.

There were multiple update entries for the Mt Clear fire on the CFA website at 5.30pm and again a minute ago. Look for fires in region 15. http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/incidents/incident_summary.htm
