Calisthenics documentary to showcase Ballarat's South Street

18 Oct, 2011 11:32 PM
BALLARAT’S Royal South Street Competitions will feature in a new independent documentary film about dance sport calisthenics.

Melbourne filmmakers Maz Swierczak and Katie Harley are filming and producing the documentary which is expected to be released in late 2012.

The project follows dancers aged nine to 12 years as they travel around the state for various competitions. Ms Swierczak said she decided to make the film to draw on her own experience as a calisthenics dancer growing up.

“It seems these days, most portrayal of children’s sport in popular media is very negative, focusing on pushy parents, tantrums, injuries and stressed out kids. I wanted to create a project which focuses on the positives and encourages children into sport,” she said.

The pair plan to enter the film into local and international film festivals.
