Call for action on 'dangerous' road

04 Jul, 2009 12:27 AM
CLUNES residents are still waiting for grading of an unsealed road nearly six months after alerting Hepburn Shire to its condition.

Potholes in Alfred St have deepened and corrugations have worsened with the onset of wet weather, heightening the concerns of those who use the road.

Alfred St is a main thoroughfare into Clunes from Fairview Estate.

Wayne Glennie, a resident of the estate, is leading the charge to have the road graded so travel for residents along the 2km section is safer.

After receiving what he thought was an unsatisfactory response from the council in February, Mr Glennie has written to Ballarat MHR Catherine King to have action taken.

Ms King, in a letter dated June 17, has promised to seek an answer about why the road cannot be graded and to ask the council to provide a "satisfactory result".

"We have tried to make a fair bit of noise to get a fair bit done and nothing is happening," he said.

"We are still using it and it is becoming more and more dangerous."

In a letter dated February 2, the council told Mr Glennie it would investigate "as soon as practical" but subject to "cost, efficient use of resources and other relevant factors".

In that time little has happened, according to Mr Glennie.

He conceded many residents were using Alfred St as a shortcut to avoid "back-tracking" onto Ballarat-Maryborough Rd.

However the council's focus on "Daylesford and toilet blocks" was misplaced, Mr Glennie said.

"I'm not going to rest until it's fixed," he said.

"They are spending thousands on toilet blocks but not here."

Hepburn Shire Council has not responded to questions from aifThe Courieraif.

In March the council's then acting development and infrastructure director Andrew Bourke said Alfred St was never intended to be a main thoroughfare to and from town.
