Fire crews battled for three hours to control a fire which came within metres of burning a home just north of Skipton yesterday.
CFA district 16 operations officer Ian Morley said the 50ha grass and stubble fire was sparked at 2.10pm as a result of a roadside burn-off.
Mr Morley said changing wind gusts took the fire over containment lines and into the nearby property as the storm front moved in.
He said crews from 10 fire brigades along with a large number of neighbours and “private units” successfully worked to save the home on the property.
“I suppose there’s an element of luck in any firefight, but I’d put the fact the house was saved down to the good efforts of firefighters, who put extra effort into saving assets,” he said.
Tankers and other firefighting appliances from the Skipton, Linton, Beaufort and Stoneleigh brigades were among those who attended the scene. The blaze was eventually controlled at 5.10pm, but crews continued to patrol the area well into the night.
Delilah, the Ballarat-based Erickson air-crane, was also used. Mr Morley said a “fly-over” would be conducted this morning to determine any further hot-spots.
