Christmas appeal looks ship-shape

CREW members from HMAS Ballarat packed Christmas hampers in ship-shape style for Anglicare yesterday.Plum pudding, tinned ham and vegetables, custard, chips and bon bons all went into the mix to help provide needy families with a Christmas dinner. Helping out on the assembly line was leading seaman Phillip Milton."It's pretty similar to storing ship,'' he said."It's my second time here (in Ballarat), we get pretty excited; everyone treats us like rockstars.''Anglicare chairman Robin Mitchell said the help provided by the sailors was much appreciated."The first year when we had our volunteers doing it, it was a task beyond us,'' he said."It makes a huge difference.''Anglicare is expecting to provide about 1000 hampers to people who cannot afford a Christmas dinner this year.About 60 HMAS Ballarat crew were in town yesterday to take part in United Way's Day of Caring.United Way president Anne-Marie Maley said the day was a fantastic opportunity for the community to build a relationship with HMAS Ballarat.As part of the event crew members took part in a range of activities around the city including packing hampers, preparing lunch for city seniors and meeting with disengaged youth.
